I think part of the reason why this comes up is it’s come out in interviews and such that after Fred entered the band, Adam apparently quit smoking for a while and worked on his voice, and I do think some videos from back then show the progress tbh
that’s fair, but I think there’s some bands I go to see because they’re gonna be a good time and play really well, and then there’s other bands that I go to see just because it’ll be a good time!
That's fine, I'm not saying someone can't enjoy a band live regardless of their quality. I'm specifically saying being dismissive of someone being critical of a performance because it's "not important" is what I'm taking issue with.
I’m curious - who else would you compare them to? A band that’s been in the scene this long, that got considerably large, and is this bad live. Aside from Tom.
Guessing you mean Delonge lol Idk, Gerard Way sounds pretty rough when he tries going for their higher notes in certain specific songs, but I still think he sounds a million times better than Adam. Hard to think of examples, though, Tom would've been my go to
I mean Tom started using pitch correction during AVA last tour/recent shows and seems to have helped? Could start using that?
I’ve seen modest mouse and cursive when Isaac and Tim were both hammered and they sounded 50 times better than those videos of Adam.
blink was my first example. I’ve seen them a couple times and each time it was terrible but fun. bright eyes / Conor comes to kind as well. Musically, always great. Hit or miss whether Conor shows up to perform or party though. another one I saw a few times way back in the day was 30 Seconds to Mars. Absolutely terrible every single time I’ve seen them but every show was fun and full of sing alongs.
Yea, being drunk I think is a separate issue. I’ve seen Colin from Decemberists drunk, as well as Matt from the national. It certainly can negatively impact the experience. Matt appears to be taking it a bit easier on the booze pre-show from videos I’ve seen lately. Still, can’t think of anyone besides Adam that has coasted this long on studio vocal performances and signature mic swings.
Anyway Taking Back Sunday was phenomenally awesome tonight. Adam's voice was way better than I expected or in those other videos, and the venue's audio quality was tight. I mean, 3EB's singer sounded clearer but TBS is so freaking fun on stage. Absolute blast. Comparing 3EB to TBS I just realize how blatant of an emo pop punk kid I'll always be. I just want to see the band having fun on stage.
I know this tour has underperformed in certain markets but NJ was practically sold out tonight. Cute Without the E felt pretty damn special tonight with what felt like an entire amphitheater singing along.
Yea man so much fun!! Played straight hits. I just think the set up of PNC might have been better for Adam rather than those outside festival set ups but who knows. Maybe he read some things from the internet. I mean he definitely seemed pretty, uh eccentric during when he talked. 3EB played so many unknowns and really drained the audience I felt. They sounded clearer, but I and a lot of the audience was bored about half the time though enjoyed the songs I knew.
I agree with this. This is something I disagree with my bandmates all the time. They’re in the “it’s rock and roll, who cares how it sounds” camp and I’m firmly in the “we should strive to perform at the best of our abilities” at every show. You have someone’s attention for 30+ minutes - make it worth the while.
I'm glad their performances are getting some discussion here. I saw them during their 2019 tour where they played TAYF and either WYWTB or Louder Now depending on the night and their performance was awful. Pretty sure Adam was drunk but it was one of the worst performances I've seen from any band live. I have always been aware Adam wasn't the strongest vocalist but I expected a competent performance at least.
I mean, at this point you know what you're going to get with this band. So take it or leave it, there are plenty of other bands out there who sound great. I think there's enough room in rock n' roll for bands who may sound like shit but are still a good time to watch, and bands who really strive for excellence every performance
Last two albums are my fave TBS albums, so as long as they keep doing that I'm happy. Barely go to shows so it's whatever to me really. Well, as long as they don't become embarrassed by their live performances and decide to hang it up lol. I def wouldn't pay to see what I've heard of them live this past week
I’m curious about this as well, especially after the whole Jimmy Eat World thing on the last third eye blind tour lol
It’s a payday for both bands who at this point are purely a nostalgia based business. I’m sure they get along just fine.
Last I saw TBS was at Firefly 2021 last fall and they sounded okay from what I remember. We were just singing/screaming along so that’s all that mattered to us haha
