outside of like Flicker Fade, Stood A Chance, Better Homes and Gardens, and We Were Younger Then I struggle to remember what the other songs on Happiness Is sound like
i think for me happiness is really fulfilled the promise of them reuniting with john and shaun, imo it does sound like a tbs record and a straylight run record smashed together, especially the ballads, all of which have the incredible dynamics of the best sr stuff tidal wave was them pushing off into a newish, more americana-inflected sound together and that's why i love that record just as much
Was really hopeful going into this year that we'd get a new record from them in 2022 but eh, whatever. Hopefully 2023.
Up until now, the dudes have been pretty consistent with churning out new records fairly regularly in 2-3 yr intervals. They're stepping into bn territory now with this most recent lull. Very hopeful it lives up and ventures to new places.
I think if you take half of Happiness Is and half of Tidal Wave you have a really really great record
My adjusted hope for a new album is that they can get it finished this year, then from there who the hell knows when it will come out with vinyl delays and whatnot. I did see that they are doing a video shoot for the song they worked on with Steve Aoki, so hopefully we at least get that soon.
Tidal Wave starts off incredibly strong, but I feel like the last 5 tracks are all duds. I've listened to that album a hundred times and I honestly can't remember how any of those songs even sound. Happiness Is is great and exactly what I was hoping for with the reunion. Flicker Fade, How I Met Your Mother, All The Way and Better Homes are all some of my all time favorite TBS songs. Self titled seems like it was over thought to death. Like @unbornwhiskey said, the demos showed so much promise. A lot of the songs it just feels like they were trying too hard to make an appealing radio rock song. Half the songs have choruses where Adam just repeats the same four word phrase over and over. "IM SORRRRRYYYY COME BACCKKKKK," "IT DOESNT FEEL A THING LIKE FALLLLLINGGGGG," "YOU GOT MEEEEEE WHERE YOU WANT ME" etc etc. It's like they thought simple=catchy. El Paso and This is All Now are both fantastic songs, but unfortunately having those two on the album just highlights how bland the rest of the album is.
I am personally offended that you are not infatuated with I'll Find A Way, Homecoming, We Don't Go In There & In the Middle of it All. Please apologize.
Holy Water is the only song I don't love on Tidal Wave. Adam really reaches with those high notes and it's so straining, imo. I realize I'm probably in the minority, because if I recall, everyone loved that song. Like You Do is the only song I don't love on Happiness Is...
Like You Do is the only song I don't like on either Happiness or Tidal Wave. It's grown on me a little but I wouldn't miss it
i can think of few records where one specific song is so noticeably undercooked compared to the rest of the record as Like You Do is on HI. It fits the mood of the record so I get it but wow is it bland compared to the rest.
These guys desperately need a new album. I’m amazed thee guys are still going strong after no new album in almost 7 years. That TAYF anniversary money must be good haha.
I mean, I love this band and their recent output, but they are totally a nostalgia band for most people. And that's fine. I get not releasing new music and focusing on their past triumphs, it's a job and they need money. That being said, I would personally love new music.
thats how I feel about S/T. I fall far short from saying it’s a good album but it’s never as bad as I remember it being and there’s still 3-4 top tier songs on it.
