Carpathia is obviously great, that and Sink Into Me are the only worthwhile songs on the album though
Yup. Carpathia, Sink Into Me, New Again, and Everything Must Go. Those are the only ones I ever go back to.
I’d put Carpathia and EMG as my top two. Where My Mouth Is has grown on me a lot over the years. Think it’s third for me
"Where My Mouth Is" is so goddamn good... right until those "why'd you do it, why oh why'd you do it" backing vox fuck it up lmao
Listening to louder now and my blue heaven is still the best song. Spin makes me want to run through a wall.
Thoughts on New Again. I remember being floored when it came out that they pretty much ditched everything about them that I loved (dual vocals, the big breakdowns, the song-style changes). It just seemed like a much more straight forward (and kind of generic) rock record. But I was happy just to have a new TBS album because at that point, it was the longest they had gone in between records. After a while, I soured on it pretty hardcore. And then they reunited, and I was stoked. But then ST came out and it was somehow worse than NA and a major disappointment. I came to appreciate NA a lot more. Great Songs: Swing (this would be a great song on any TBS album) Carpathia Summer, Man Really good songs EMG (personally think it's overrated and don't like it nearly as much as everyone else on here, but still like it) Cut Me Up Where My Mouth Is The rest is very 'meh' to me. I think New Again could have been a great song, it starts off well, but then becomes super repetitive and drawn out to the point that it almost becomes cringey. Anyway, I saw the NA vinyl at my local record shop a few years ago and it was only like, $13 so I bought it. Had it been $20 or more, probably no chance I would have bought it.
EMG was definitely my favorite when it came out, but it's definitely fallen down a tier for me since it came out. I think it's something about the production. It's such a raw and emotional song and it feels just a little too glossy. That and Better Homes and Gardens is essentially covering the same subject matter but is a better song in the end.
I will say that out of all the bands I like enough to own multiple/all records of...TBS is probably the one with the weakest album closers. I still like some of them, but for whatever reason their album closers just often aren't the strongest songs on the album like they can be with a lot of other bands. And yeah Swing is definitely the song on NA that would fit on most other TBS albums.
The line I crack open the safe myself now 45-22 always made me mad. There would be more than 2 numbers on the combination!
they definitely have weak closers. slowdance on the inside and i’ll let you live are the only good ones.
these takes aren’t interesting enough. we gotta spice it up. i’ll start. divine intervention is great songwriting but it kinda lands a little lackluster because of adam’s voice. if it was sung by someone with a bit more command of their quiet voice it’d be a+
