Hmmmmm, as much as I like New Again better than both those albums, I agree with this statement. More songs like El Paso would be cool. Shame they only seemed to play it on the first Self Titled tour.
They've talked about El Paso a lot. Mainly how they thought fans would really love it, but they said when they played it, it got little reaction, to their surprise. I've seen it live (they opened with it on their 2011 tour) and I remember Adam had to ask people in the balcony to get out of their seats. It was kind of bizarre.
That's nonsense! How I Met Your Mother, Death Wolf, El Paso all beg to differ. Seriously though, I've never really thought of New Again as all that heavy. It does have some heavier moments but I think pretty much every other album is consistently more heavy than it.
I remember in a handful of interviews, they mentioned they really enjoyed playing El Paso live, but the crowd response was underwhelming, so they began playing it less.
I think crowd response is underwhelming for everything that isn't Louder Now or before. The last time I saw them, they opened up with the jam Stood a Chance and it was still in the pit. The second song was Cute and it went wild. Such a shame.
eh, it doesn't fit the style of anything the band has ever done before or since, so I don't think it's that unpopular of a thing to say. I get it. Sidenote: On my own personal TBS mix, I put the opening Preface track from Happiness Is in front leading into El Paso and it sounds so good together.
All this talk made me go and watch the El Paso music video. Man, I knew Mark was a great drummer but actually seeing him jam out is something else, esp that build up in the bridge.
Yeah, I remember seeing them shortly after Self-Titled was released at a Warped show and people were in the crowd saying the new music was terrible. They opened with El Paso and it was rad but the crowd didn't seem to care at all.
Thats absurd about the crowd reaction to El Paso. I wanna hear that song live so damn bad.....definitely one of my Top 5 TBS songs.
I haven't been able to see them since before Tidal Wave so I want to see the hits on that album of course, but I'd love to see El Paso, Best Places, Beat Up Car, Spin and Union live. I haven't seen those yet
My New Again EP 1. New Again 2. Lonely, Lonely 3. Summer, Man 4. Swing 5. Where My Mouth Is 6. Everything Must Go Didn’t See That Coming is worthy but these are my top 6 from that release/era.
Listened to New Again and the Self-Titled today. Still really enjoy both for the most part. Call Me In The Morning is such a great song.
i think el paso is unlistenable. However, I've heard it live a few times and it kicks. found myself rocking out and moshing hard.
Still stand by my take that New Again is their most technically impressive record. Even the moments I don’t love are still at least interesting, musically.
They played El Paso at a riot fest after show and looked almost nervous to do so but I don’t know if it’s because of the song itself or any number of reasons. It was great either way My baseless speculation is that with Asia, Australia, half the us, and the uk/eu being covered until summer they’ll be finished up with the tour in November with the second USA leg and then close it out with the holiday shows (I’m probably captain obvious.) For the next album of all new material there’s probably some already recorded within the same session they did the two songs for compilations released in, and perhaps around these past holiday shows when they were all in Long Island for a while. ill assume they’ll rest for the winter and spring in 2020 then look to start a press cycle in the summer. But also i wasn’t cc’d in any three year plans
I was lucky enough to go get to go to the filming of that video in Hoboken, NJ. They played the song 3 times throughout the set to film the video. Adam was pretty funny by the third time he played it and said something along the lines of "I never thought when we wrote this song I'd have to sing it 3 times in an hour." and was complaining about the strain on his voice from screaming that much, haha.
