What are you talking about, they’ve been playing songs they weren’t in the band for for years and years every single night of every tour. And I highly doubt either of them are anywhere near petty enough to not play songs at a full album Show because they’re about them
I put mine in an order I'd like to see the setlist be: 1. El Paso 2. Cute Without The E 3. Spin 4. Tidal Wave 5. Beat Up Car 6. Swing 7. My Blue Heaven 8. Best Places to Be a Mom 9. Call Me in the Morning 10. Flicker Fade 11. The Blue Channel 12. Summer, Man 13. We Were Younger Then 14. Slowdance on the Inside 15. Call Come Running 16. A Decade Under the Influence 17. Everything Must Go 18. Can’t Look Back 19. 180 by Summer Encore: 20. You’re So Last Summer 21. MakeDamnSure hmmmmmm, great set but not may deep cuts. They have too many good and must play songs! haha
I said *some* of the songs. Of course they've been playing the 'hits' from those albums but there are certainly deep cuts on those albums that they never play. They have not played The Union, which is clearly about John and Shaun, since 2009. Plenty of other songs from those albums they haven't played since the reunion.
This is pretty much impossible to do!! i don't think there's any residual pettiness on the part of john and shaun re: playing songs from versions of the band that didn't include them (beyond, of course, "the union"). iirc shaun once said he enjoyed wrapping his head around matt rubano's basslines bc they're such different players them not playing much of new again is almost certainly a result of how much adam and mark hate that record
This has always confused me....like, they played a lot songs off the record a lot and obviously liked them at one point. I didn't hear of the band not liking New Again until after John and Shaun re joined. To me it seems like their input on the the record influenced the band not to play it anymore, but that could just be me thinking too much into it.
i think they mostly hate the sound of it more than the songs, and also the circumstances under which it was made which is weird but artists have weird opinions of their own material
A long time ago somebody told me that they'd tried to go with a different producer for New Again, but at that point it was super hairy with the label and the producer since they'd already done a few songs with him. I also recall Adam saying Where My Mouth Is was a completely different song before they went in with the producer (and maybe that Everything Must Go also got changed dramatically?) Over all, yeah I think it was that they didn't like the way it came out -- they really only released Sink Into Me from it as a single (though Warner tried to promote Where My Mouth Is, since they did it on Fuse once.) I think Adam's also expressed frustration with some of the lyrics too, so there's that. I have a feeling Shaun and John would agree to doing full album shows for albums they weren't part of, especially because it would be a huge money making opportunity for the band. No doubt the shows would sell out and they've all got families to take care of now.
I don't think they like hate New Again, but I think they aren't as happy with the end result as they would have liked to be. It also doesn't get a good response at shows which can't be fun for the band playing it. I personally love all their albums, including New Again, but I'm not sure of the following. 1. 7 albums in two nights? That's a lot of material. 2. As much as it's great to still hear those tunes, it would be weird in some sense to see the band perform an album in it's entirety that they didn't all write. It's one thing to see them do a few of the songs live, it's another to do the whole album.
Very true haha. I'll never understand Thrice's hate of the sound of Artist in the Ambulance. Both albums sound great to me haha
I wonder if it's a discrepancy between how it sounded in their head and what they wanted to put out vs what was actually recorded and put out

I mean, it doesn’t make much sense to for a band to pretty much disown a record when it’s new and they have to tour off it. Metallica realised pretty quickly St. Anger was a dud, but they still had to sell the thing.
