Just poppin in here randomly to say that We Were Younger Then may be one of their more underrated songs.
YES. I’ll never understand how this hasn’t been a main set closer for the last 10 years. The layered vocal lines at the end “Only in pictures…” “We were younger then” and “…and the nothing begins” gives me chills.
Complete side note but It’s so weird and kind of refreshing to see Adam be so silly and personable on social media. There was a long, long, long time where he was kind of the “too cool for school” type but as he has gotten older he’s really leaning into the corniness and I love it.
Thought they sounded pretty good last night for at least half of the set. The 152 songs sounded pretty good, especially Amphetamine Smiles, which I thought was a highlight of the set. Drummer didn’t skip a beat and my man Nathan was working overtime up there. Loved his vocal additions!
Yeah the videos from behind the scenes have been great. I love that they have a photographer out with them. He did that really long podcast that posted earlier this week, and he touched a little on struggling with the idea of social media being an integral part of the industry these days, so I’m glad that he’s seemed to find a way to engage that’s comfortable for him.
Did they not play Lightbringer??? According to Setlist.FM, they didn't - but they did bring back Your Own Disaster. A few nights ago they played neither Your Own Disaster or Divine Intervention...weird.
I feel like whoever is updating for setlist.fm isn’t doing it fully? I know I saw a video from Calgary where they played Your Own Disaster but it’s not on the set list for setlist.fm:
They played Lightbringer and Your Own Disaster. Adam even introduced the latter with a story about "we used to play this other slow song ALL the time, but recently someone brought it to our attention that we have another slow song. So here it is!"
I listened to the podcast as well, and I thought it was overall an interesting listen but the one part that stuck with me was where he was talking about his singing. He touched on how the first couple of records was just him yelling and hoping it sounded right. He also was pretty self-aware that he doesn’t sound good some times but its the voice he’s got and he makes it work as best as he can. He said that if he tried to sing with better technique or more clean, he worries that it would come off sterile and unnatural.
There are a few moments on the first two albums where his singing is a bit more subdued but for the most part, he was yell-singing. That was also just the style back in the day though, so it isn't entirely his fault. (I think it's cute and endearing.) And yeah, he is right. His singing style is SOVL and that's why I love it so much.
Do you guys think that they're gonna do the same setlist they're gonna be doing? Probably. Would be nice if they threw a different song in there, though. The real question is--will they be doing "Divine" or "Disaster" tomorrow? Or neither?
Show tonight was sold out so I didn’t get to go, oh well they tour literally all the time I’m sure I’ll see them again
