    Are You Watching Closely?

When I saw them in Austin Saturday, John sounded fine, even good at times. I'd say he vocally carried the show (and Nathan backups were killer), but John's guitar tone/sound was awful and he messed up the intro to Liar and had to start over. Felt bad for him after seeing his tweet the first week. The band missed Mark more than anyones vocals bothered me live in person though tbh

I don't care for the weird guttural voice that he does at times. It sounds like he's trying to imitate the Modest Mouse vocalist (and I don't know if he's actually aware of that). Wish I was there to see him carry the show, though.
Nathan's backing vocals are beautiful. They remind me of Fazzi's at times.

I purposefully didn't take any videos from last week because I thought it would be rough to look back on lol

For what it's worth, I don't remember John sounding that bad at all. I was actually pleasantly surprised how he sounded compared to the Coachella video floating around. Maybe I got lucky, but yeah that video is a rough watch

Mark was definitely missed. I thought the fill in drummer was barely hanging in there during the Timberwolves bridge lol

Wrecked 'em? Damn near killed 'em!

Backed on Nathan’s vocals. This clip of them at Warped Tour 2012 is great. John went home for his son’s birth so Nathan stepped up on vocals for Error: Operator and What It Feels Like to Be A Ghost and killed it. Keith Buckley doing El Paso and Dan from Four Year Strong doing Timberwolves and Liar was great too.

i think they struggle to play and sing older songs / aren't as interested.

i saw a clip of 'The One' the other day and it sounded fantastic.

Its mainly due to their 42 year old voices being much deeper than the 19 year old voices that recorded TAYF. Nothing they can do about that.
That being said, Adam still smokes like a chimney and that sure aint helping.

    this is all there is

I really do empathize with them getting older, but still wanting / being expected to play songs like they're 22. And we know they are capable of sounding great, like you said, so it just makes the situation complicated all around in terms of how they could do things better. Lower the key? Get serious about vocal coaching/lessons (surely they have done this)? Stop dancing so much and wearing yourself out and just sing the damn song? We can armchair tour manager all day long, but I really wish them all the best with figuring it out.

I honestly would not mind one bit if they straight up leaned into "you're older, we're older, here are stripped-down sing-along versions of the old songs" instead of borderline butchering them full band like that video above.

I'm still looking forward to seeing them in two and a half weeks for close to the 20th time because as mentioned many times before, when they're playing these 1-2K club shows, the crowd practically drowns them out anyway so it's hardly noticeable unless you're watching playback videos.

    Are You Watching Closely?

Were you in Austin? He was playing double bass at times, full time instead of half, half instead of full... I mean, I dunno how much time he had to prep, but it made it a weird night to think that only Adam had been a part of every song played that night, and he was easily the worst (and I love Adam, warts and all)

    Are You Watching Closely?

They opened with Sold in Austin and the amount of reverb on his voice along with little/no guitar was a HORRID choice (sound was a mess into the 2nd song and then it cleared up). Oddly enough I'd say Adam did the best on Louder Now songs, the 152, then everything else..

And as everyone has said, I had a blast and would never introduce someone to TBS live via video.... it's something you have to experience in person to understand

do you know what lyrics Adam was singing towards the end before he backed away from the microphone and laughed then proceeded to finish the song?

I was out the show and couldn’t place it. Didn’t seem like lyrics to the album version. I could be wrong.

He has a history of inserting popular songs into parts of his songs live I’ve heard him sing 50 cent “in da club” back in the first lineup days back in 03, sunflower by post Malone more recently, and he mentioned in the ViP before this show he used to do lose yourself by Eminem. They were joking about sneaking “everybody dance now” into one of their songs.

Idk I think those outdoor shows that were kinda trending last year were way worse than this performance. But old news either way lol

Knowing him, probably a Post Malone song.
EDIT: It was "LEVI'S JEANS" by Beyoncé feat. Post Malone. See, I'm always right.

    Not newbie, I think Supporter

Not sure why this conversation rehashes with TBS everywhere. They're a nostalgia act and they're a fun singalong band. They're awful live but they're having fun. I enjoy seeing them I just know what I'm getting. I'd rather have Adam doing his thing up there then listen to a band that sounds perfect but doesn't want to be there.

I’d rather they just keep going out there and doing whatever they need to do to keep making records, regardless of how good it sounds live.

I’ve seen TBS a handful of times & I doubt I’ll be going out of my way to see them again unless they were doing a full album play through of new stuff. But I love 152, so as long as they keep making records I’m happy.

You can't call TBS a "nostalgia act" if you've heard 152 or even Tidal Wave. They're a quality studio band and a ton of fun live band... far from a "nostalgia act" imo
