Please, by all means, go down the NA rabbit hole.

And then leave it there on your way out.

NEw Again wasn't very good BUT I will say I don't think its lack of success was totally on that, but rather that the bubble had burst on the emo/alt rock era. I've said in here before but 2007 seemed to be the pinnacle and the bubble burst and slowly went down from there. By 2009, the 'scene' had seemingly be completely overtaken by that 'mall emo' look and sound, and that was getting the last grasps of popularity that were left, pop punk was no where to be seen on the billboard anymore with the exception of Green Day breathing one last gasp of popularity into it with 21CB, etc. It just wasn't mainstream anymore and TBS despite being huge in 2007 seemed almost forgotten by the mainstream in 2009. Just felt like you weren't seeing those types of bands break through to the mainstream from the "alternative" radio stations and billboard lists that you might have been seeing in 2005 or whatever

Didn't expect a TBS album to be my most played of the year at the beginning of 2023, but here we are.

I largely agree with this but would add that not only was the scene’s bubble bursting, but New Again (love it now, but to my point, didn’t care for it at the time) went in a direction that was both divergent from the classic emo/pop punk TBS sound (thus alienating the crowd that still wanted that) and from greater rock in general that was either going more indie or, for a lot of scene bands, heavier (and thus alienating everyone else). Couldn’t tell ya many people in 2007-9 that wanted a barroom/straight rock and roll type album at all, let alone from TBS.

You can’t ignore the fan base getting tired of the constant lineup changes too.. this was their third backing singer over 4 albums

TBS was my second most played artist this year, largely off the back of 152 and New Again. Really surprised at the lack of WYWTB tracks in my Wrapped playlist, tbh.

Listened to WYWTB the other day and I was kinda struck how forward the guitar parts are. There's riffs! Some of them are kinda heavy even.

The reunion albums are a lot different guitar-wise. Currently listened to 152 and I appreciate how textured they are on this album. S'Old would sound WAY different if it came out in 2008.

WYWTB, imo, features Rubano’s best bass work in TBS. His use of a 5-string bass at the time also was a big part of that heaviness.

Shaun’s basslines on TAYF don’t stand out to me mainly because of the production/mix on that album, but since he came back to the band he’s definitely had a few songs that he shines on. His bass line on Amphetamine Smiles is really pretty.

Was thinking yesterday how nobody ever talks about Shaun and like all you hear is how they shouldn't have gotten rid of Rubano. Shaun is really good

Shaun is great. He's got a different style than Rubano. I would describe Rubano as having a smoother sound and letting the notes linger a little whereas Shaun's basslines are a little more plucky and bouncy. Rubano's style helps his basslines stand out a little more, but I think Shaun's style is part of what gives TAYF and 152 that more frantic, energetic sound even if they're not as high in the mix.

Undoubtedly talented, I just prefer Rubano slightly more.

I don’t have enough knowledge to have a strong opinion on whose bass playing is better for TBS, but I do know Shaun’s vibes as just a dude who rocks are immaculate.

Yeah I think overall it does get a little lost in the mix on TAYF but the bridge part in Cute was probably one of the first basslines that got me into the instrument. His playing along with Mark's drumming on 152 is a big reason why i love this record as much as I do.

    And Rubano was/is the shit

Shaun is talented no doubt, but the only time I’ve noticed a part of his is the outro of Stood a Chance.

Rubano, however, immediately I think of Carpathia, New Again, Error:Operator, the list goes on.
