Their song "Figuring it out" came on the radio via XM Alt Nation while I was driving into work. At first from the sound of it, I turned it up, thinking "hey, this sounds like it must be a new song off the upcoming Blink-182 album!" I quickly came to regret turning up the volume though, realizing that no way was it Blink-182. The singer's voice, which at no point did it ever sound like he was trying to actually sing anything, was ringing my ears with this piercing distain of auto-tune. This sat on top of a simple bass and drum beat, that failed to ever change anything up, but had my head processing images of American Pie movies that I couldn't shake for the entirity of the song. The entire track wreaked of stolen Blink-182 riffs, and self recorded, mixed, mastered and produced garage band auto tune atrocities. It's been ages since I heard new music and felt like this, with such contempt for blatant sound stealing and terrible lack of talent, probably since I heard Hawthorne Heights for the first time. Did I just wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning and have a weird random one off terrible first impression of this band? Am I missing something? Or does this band really just need to "figure out" that they're terrible, fire their singer, and attempt to actually write anything themselves?
It's Billy Joe from Good Charlotte's son's band, so like, obviously they're big and shitty Also why make a thread about a band you can't stand? Why give them more publicity?
That makes a large degree of sense. One of my closing thoughts as the song died down was definitely "who are these kids related to?" Good to know though that I didn't randomly cross the "grumpy old man that hates everything" threshold this morning.
The point was clearly interest in knowing if anyone in the community was familiar with them, with the follow up inquiry if so, of any opinions. Particularly wanting to know if anyone likes them, or had anything good to say about their music. Was curious if my first judgment was too harsh, or if it was on par with a general consensus. You know… like most music discussion threads??? Feel like this follow up is pretty much a one to one repost of the original, minus my personal thoughts and opinions on their music. What exactly was confusing to you?
The thread came off as "Anyone heard of this band? They are awful, don't listen." Making a post like that isn't really promoting much growth or discussion. You'll probably get a bunch of dismissive 'okay' posts if even that.
So you're saying I was too quick to judge then? If so, is there a different track in specific you think I should give a try and check out?
I'd say so, yeah. Listen to BRB or D'You Have a Car if you want to give them a second chance. They might just not be for you. I'd say your opinion of Figuring It Out is pretty harsh, so it's likely just not your thing. I like em'! Your post did make me laugh, though.
This song is kinda interesting.... getting some Cage the Elephant kinda vibes honestly. Not sure about the way he sings overall though, hmmm
Listening to a few more songs on this album, total FIDLAR / Dr Manhattan shit goin on here too, now I want to check out this album
It would be nice if the OP was able to distinguish "piercing auto-tune" from vocal distortion. Is this really the official thread for these guys on here?
Listened to Drive North last night, what a great album. So many different influence in there, and the production tricks really elevate the songs from more standard fare.
Yeah, its a good album. i'm interested to see what they do next. This release was such a big change/transition for them from their previous stuff. Just wondering if they'll experiment more or stay on the same level.
the original post reads like an absolute punk thread from 2006, just with less spelling errors. the album didn't draw me in too much, i need to check it out again.
