They're about to release album 10. It's kind of insane how much staying power the band has had.

Yeah, wow. I'm just gonna look back through this thread and pick like three to listen to. I'll get to all of them eventually if I enjoy what I hear enough.

Yeah, I'd recommend The Beautiful Letdown, Hello Hurricane and Fading West. They're kind of like the three spectrums of the band I'd say. If you like any of those, you could branch of in other directions from there.

Good call, will check those out and update thread with my thoughts.

Finally got around to listening to the songs. My expectations for this just too a big dive. Don't like the "Float" sound on them at all, and "Live it Well" feels like a parody of a Switchfoot song. Disappointed.

Yeah it's like Switchfoot doing a parody of themselves doing a parody of a CCM radio song doing a parody of U2 haha. I dig Float though.

Their first 3 albums are golden. I'd put all of their first 5 against their latter 4 no contest.

Glad I'm not alone in thinking this. It's probably the most by the numbers song the band has ever done.

I actually thought "Float" was a nice change of pace for them, though I can't shake the feeling it's missing something to make it really interesting (maybe a big, heavy bridge a la "Gone".) But I couldn't agree more about "Live It Well".

    Beautiful Letdown=Nothing is Sound>Vice Verses>Oh Gravity>Hello Hurricane>Learning to Breathe>Fading West>New Way to Be Human>Legend of Chin

  12. Nothing Is Sound is definitely my favorite, followed closely by The Beautiful Letdown and Oh, Gravity. Not sure exactly what my order would be after that besides Fading West and Vice Verses being at the bottom.

    Exactly. It makes me cringe.

I actually like Live it Well a lot. I liked Jon's video explaining it which probably makes me like it more.

I was with the majority on Live it Well being horrendous but I suddenly changed my tune when I listened in the car. The production is excellent and it has a lot of classic Switchfoot elements even if it is by the numbers. If it somehow ends up being the only song like it on the record I think we're in good shape.

I seriously, seriously dig Float. If the rest of the record is as dynamic as that song this could easily be the best album they've put out since Nothing is Sound.

Man, I legitimately think "Float" is awful. Surprised people dig that one. Really hope that's not an indication of the direction this album is taking.

I didn't like Float at first, but I really like it now. I like Live it Well too though so you can probably disregard anything I say from here forward. Hahaha

Float is fine. Live it Well is terrible.

Just listened to "Live It Well". It's fine, I don't hate it. Very typical Jon ballad, those are typically towards the bottom end of my rankings on their records (The World You Want, Your Love is a Song, etc). I think it's a little too earnest for most. Production is cool. Will probably crush it in the CCM world.

Float is seriously one of my favorite Switchfoot tunes in a while. Super impressed that the band can take a song in an odd meter like that and make it groove so well. Glad to see them trying some new(ish) stuff so late in their career. Highlights for me are the bass line, walk up in the guitar in the chorus, the B phrase of the Chorus, hi hat work in the bridge, keys hook post bridge. Overall like it a ton, high hopes for the record.

Man, The World You Want is probably a top 10 song from the band for me.

The World You Want is supremely underrated. Best song on Fading West and maybe the best SF song since Hello Hurricane.
