In defense of a critic I do not know: not liking Sinners for whatever reason does not discount their review of Superman or any other movie!
I think being a reviewer for The Daily Beast (hilarious that they accidentally broke the embargo) is reason enough to be doubtful. But, for the heck of it, I skimmed some other reviews. (Which is already giving more consideration than this deserves?) And in addition to hating Sinners, he also liked the Lilo & Stitch remake and Cap 4. Idk, make of that what you will.
lol why did you wake up today and decide to go to bat for The Daily Beast. Dumb sources can be correct about things. Maybe the movie will be bad. I don’t think anyone who posts here knows yet. But either way, I’m not gonna be interested in that source’s perspective.
To a bad writer at a clickbait rag publication whose reviews I virtually universally disagree with? No?
Yeah, that's me, definitely the same as the racist, sexist, Snyderverse Twitter trolls and not someone with a lifetime of thought on online publications and entertainment art "criticism." What a ridiculous accusation.
Oh my god calm down lol I obviously didn’t mean THAT part of it. More the Stan-Twitter kind of attitude of “well this guy feels differently so OBVIOUSLY he’s wrong!!”
And I can’t overstate how much I don’t care who the guy writes for, or the substance of the review. All I’m saying is it seems very silly to say “he hates this other thing, he sucks”
You're the one that said it, a phrase that has obvious implications to anyone that knows anything about that entire ordeal, in the Superman thread!, and now are mad at how the people you said it to "took it"? Maybe you should "calm down" a bit, 'cause wtf is this shit? No one said anything about the guy "feeling differently," the most anyone has said is "this dude's a bad critic who has a history of writing shit that opposite of how I feel about movies for a publication that is absolutely awful." A completely normal and rational way to look at online publications and people you read.
Like I said: Also, if I end up loving this movie (very likely given my tastes and track record with this filmmaker), I’ll still be open to reading critiques if they seem to be coming from an interesting place. And the reverse will also be true. I just think, even if this guy is a great dude irl, the opinions I’ve seen and the place that it’s being published by/filtered through mean I’m personally not gonna take it seriously.
So this went off the rails very quickly. In Josh's defense, I understand his point about this forum sometimes being allergic to differences of opinion, and I'm guilty of it myself. However, I feel like calling it out would have more value if posters were harassing each other, not some random critic on the internet. I'm not sure who defending him benefits.
I certainly didn’t mean to create anything by simply commenting an early review from a widely read publication was already out, far ahead of the embargo. Notice I didn’t even link to it (I also think the writer is a hack) but thought it more curious as a first voice in the room for what is likely one of the biggest movies of the summer.
