Finished derycks book. Hard not to compare it to Mark Hoppus’s but I felt like Marks was better written. I wasn’t dialed in to sum41 after chuck so I had no idea of all the band issues. Decent read and it’s short.
I’m not educated/informed enough to say which was technically written better. But I think Deryck’s was more interesting to me as I learned a lot that I didn’t know and it felt like he spent more time on events, allowing more detail. I loved Mark’s book, for sure! But the gaps feel much bigger in between events/stories.
Probably the Dan Ozzi effect. Not sure who (assuming someone) ghostwrote Deryk’s but it needed some more editing in a few places. Reminded me of Travis’s book where I felt like I didn’t need to hear about any other parties and wild nights.
I think Deryck said he wrote his own book, which I buy. It's got a very conversational, authentic tone – especially to hear him read it – but it's definitely not as polished.
Could see that. Always assume to get something published someone is behind the scenes with most “non traditional” writers.
Deryck started with a writer, but didn’t like how the book was sounding as it was being written. He ended up writing it himself, which is part of the reason why it took as long as it did.
Not necessarily a fan of all these deluxe book rereleases though. It’s a bit different than releasing a deluxe version of an album. People are more likely to re-listen to an album than read a book.
Yeah, would make way more sense to release this version first and then the non-signed versions…capitalize on the initial interest.
