I'm more of the opposite, despite my love for Underclass Hero. As much as I loved AKNF and HHOP in high school I don't revisit them much anymore.
Wish I liked the single more! Always felt Underclass Hero sounded like Sum 41 imitating the bands that were poorly imitating them to begin with, and this song falls right in line with that. The gang vocal thing also feels like a total cop out of a hook. Deryck does sound great though
I don't mind the gang vocals, but the verses with the filtered guitar plucking and vocals just reminds me too much of all the poppunk copycats/tiktokers, MGK and blackbear from the last few years, that it takes me out of the song. I know it's the other way around, that all those artists copied sum and other bands. I just had hope for something a little more uniquely Sum41. Love the drums though! I'm sure we'll get lots of other great tunes on both sides of the album.
It’s not the other way around though, at least not when it comes to the shitty sound, that’s a new thing
AKNF is my favorite Sum 41 album with Chuck being 2nd. I couldn’t really get into their albums since Screaming Bloody Murder outside of liking a few songs on each album.
Wondering if his health issues impacted his voice or if it’s a style choice because his voice used to be a lot deeper.
haven't listened to this band since Underclass Hero (which I actually loved) but the new song is pretty cool. worth checking the albums I missed?
Only if you don't care that they sound nothing like the new song or Underclass Hero. EDIT: Which is to say, I like them bunches, but I get why people don't. Sum 41's musical direction changes every day.
oh I generally like their other sounds too. not the Iron Maiden style on their early stuff so much, but their pop-punk stuff and Chuck are awesome
vaguely remember Deryck in an interview saying some of the song ideas for the Heaven side came from ideas for new bonus tracks for an AKNF reissue, but also ideas that he had originally been writing for other artists. wonder if Landmines was one of the latter since it does have a bit of that MGK-ish, whatever we're calling that "tiktok pop-punk artist" sound. decent tune but i don't see myself coming back to it much.
Song is good but I’m not blown away. Very excited about the Hell side though as I’ve always liked their heavy sound more.
I'm listening to Screaming Bloody Murder right now and I'm not liking it unfortunately. there are some cool riffs and stuff but on the whole it just feels so forced
I think it's definitely a product of deryck's life at the time. You should watch the documentary they put out about the making of that album. I still think there's some good stuff on there, but it clearly comes from a darker place overall. I do remember Dave saying in an interview that he really liked it when it released and wished he was a part of making it.
Outside of the 2 songs that absolutely don't fit the sound/atmosphere of the album, Screaming Bloody Murder is easily one of my favorites of theirs. Then again, I could listen to their entire discography and be happy. Not a bad album there. My least favorite is potentially HHOP but I love & have a ton of memories with that one nonetheless.
I still don't think I've warmed up to Deryck not playing guitar live anymore. I know it literally doesn't matter and they probably don't need three guitarists but it doesn't look right to me lol
