when you look back and think of what was going on with deryck at the time of making SBM, it puts it in a different light. Probably their darkest record. There’s a decent chunk i still enjoy off of it. also, any thoughts on the band’s decision in general? do you personally have any speculation?
I suppose it's time for a new visit through their discography. Maybe I'll finally find a way to enjoy Underclass Hero.
Knowing your music taste/history, this is wild to me. It should be right in your wheelhouse. It clicked with me during the pandemic in a big way. (need a vinyl repress)
That was one of the vinyls I was on so fast when preorders first went up lol. I honestly do really love the album, but it probably helps that it was the first new release I go to experience after I really got into the band.
I think this is more of a fact than hot take (although I am fine with each album on their own for the most part). This has been talked about before, but SBM would have been so much better without Time For You To Go and Baby You Don't Wanna Know.
Not sure if I still feel this way because it's been a while since I listened to it, but I remember Underclass Hero being my favorite Sum 41 album. Was obsessed with it when it came out and for years after. And I like DTLI and Chuck a ton too.
I actually hated Underclass Hero at first. Besides the whole "Underclass Hero" thing, I was also just annoyed they dropped the sound from Chuck and seemed to rip off Green Day and Blink a lot more. The album has grown on me a lot since, but I still think of it as lesser than the other albums.
the great thing about SBM is there are 14 tracks. so, subtract the two songs that kinda don’t mesh and aren’t really that great in general, you still have 12 great songs. there’s so many artists dropping full lengths that don’t even have 12 songs on them, and how many of those albums have 2 or more songs that are kinda mediocre? i feel like they did a great job with SBM and it just came out at a bad time. so many legacy artists in this spectrum of music have releases from the ‘09-‘13 era that people just don’t seem to care about.
I don't think it's on streaming services but Chuck has one last b-side that doesn't get talked much. Doesn't fit the album like the other two but it slaps. Reminds me that they included it on Go Chuck Yourself which is probably the only live album I've spun multiple times.
I still think UH and SBM are fantastic albums and they round out my top three along with Chuck, but I know that's pretty unpopular haha. I really didn't get into 13 Voices at all but thought Order was a really good rebound from it
Been listening to SBM, 13 Voices and Order all day today, as I didn't give them repeat listens/attention after once or twice. Really enjoying them, Order is a fantastic album.
Underclass Hero is one of those albums with some really good good stuff but also some utter trash. As much as I love Deryck it suffered from him trying to please too many different people.
When it comes to Sum 41, I was in that group who thought they got noticeably better with every album up until Underclass Hero. I loved the journey from Half Hour of Power to Chuck, as their sound gradually changed and matured. I don't even hate the idea of going back to the pop punk sound but Underclass Hero didn't feel natural. It felt very cynical. That being said, I don't think I've tried to listen to it in well over a decade so maybe my opinion will change if I give it a spin now.
I've always loved Underclass Hero, it hit me at the right time in my life and as such it will always hold a special place in my heart. I'm not sure where I would rank it but I'll never not love it.
I was only in middle school at the time, but I remember Underclass Hero being MASSIVE. And that video plus Walking Disaster playing alllll the time on MTV and whatnot. Also, I remember at the time, the only way to have With Me as your emo little MySpace song was to get it from Avril’s page lol.
i just watched the music video for "Walking Disaster" and i don't recognize the video or song whatsoever haha. cool song though. PS: i'm gonna listen to DTLI today, for the first time.
