Since listening to 13 Voices, I've revisited their discography and their first four albums hold up sooooo well. I've listened to Chuck at least 3 or 4 times this week, and I'm enjoying it more than ever. Sadly things start to go downhill with SBM. When I was 16/17, my favourite bands were Green Day, blink-182 and Sum 41. I definitely think based on Sum 41's first four albums, they had the best and most consistent run of any of those bands. Of course, if they pump out a few more albums on the level of SBM and 13 Voices, I'll look at their discography less favourably. American Idiot, Warning and blink's S/T are all up there with Sum 41's best work though of course (arguably better).
I've never held up Sum 41 even close to the level of Green Day and I think they're significantly below Blink as well. Again, I enjoy all their albums to some degree, but they've never been that kind of band for me
Sum 41 is better on an instrumental level than those other two bands. Just depends on what you are into.
blink's discography is incredibly weak imo. I can't sit through any of their albums other than the S/T (which is one of my favourite albums ever) and California which I like a lot. Green Day have a pretty good discography, can't say I listen to them much anymore though.
I think the other two write better songs by leaps and bounds. Green Day has one of the best discographies ever (if you forget the trilogy exists) Blink's discography from Dude Ranch on is fairly solid, with the exception of Dogs Eating Dogs which is horrible.
Fair enough. I think Sum is capable of more. They have the punk songs that Blink and GD do, but I like Sum's better like Welcome to Hell, Motivation, Goddamn. Then they got the good softies like Pieces, With You and Some Say. Neither band does anything heavy so I'll always think you get more with Sum. I love them all though.
I NEED the heavy. That's why I stopped listening to Dashboard and Matchbox 20. They weren't delivering the goods.
I always preferred their pop-punk sound but Chuck is still an incredible album, if it was released today it would be one of my top 10 albums of the year. 13 Voices isn't even in my top 100 probably lol
I now prefer Sum 41 to Green Day personally (up until 21st CB my top 4 was always some order of blink, Alkaline Trio, Green Day and Face To Face) as far as discography it's not even fair comparing Green Day to them though. Can't put Sum on a tier with Green Day and blink, but they've had a solid career. Actually Underclass is the only thing of theirs I don't love (maybe SBM is a notch below "love" but I really like it) cause I hear too much aping of other bands on it. I like their heavier stuff more for sure. AKNF is still up there cause it's up there with the best pop-punk albums, I just don't revisit it too much. Most likely due to there not being many albums I wore out more than that one back in the day. I get such Chuck vibes from 13 Voices and I love it. Green Day's new one is pretty good, but it won't get a ton of plays from me probably. I'm just kind of worn out on their sound sadly.
Out of Those 3: 1. blink-182 2. Sum 41 3. Green Day But my top 3 would be: 1. blink-182 2. New Found Glory 3. Tie: Motion City Soundtrack or Fall Out Boy Edit: Say Anything would be a contender for 4th place.. too hard to choose!
I'm always surprised but how much shade UH gets, I have such great memories jamming that album.. kind of reminds me of blink's Califronia, in that it focused more and melodies and vocals rather than guitar riffs.. really catchy upbeat record imo
For me it was such a step backwards and hearing the title track for the first time made me go "wtf, are they trying to redo a Fat Lip style song?". I've since come around to enjoying a lot of tracks off of it.
Especially the solo, it sounded like their version of American Idiot. Never been crazy about it. I can enjoy the album and jam out to it, but definitely don't love it.
You are right. Either way, love it! Video is ok I guess. I miss their fun videos from the first 3 records. Even though I like their heavy, darker sound, their videos for Fat Lip, In Too Deep, Still Waiting are so funny and classic.
Top 3 favorite Bands? None of those are in the top 5 for me lol. Metallica, Thrice and Story of the Year.
There are tracks that grew on me. I liked the opener, Fake, War, Twisted and Goddamn right off the back but the more I listen, There Will Be Blood, 13 Voices and Rise and Fall are really good too.
Definitely overall. Both Blink's S/T and Green Day's American Idiot are classics and all around superb records but the rest of their discography isn't that strong IMO. Sum's Chuck, DTLI, SBM, and 13 Voices (which still needs to grow on me but about 6 tracks I love) is overall more consistent in terms of quality compared to the other two's discography.
