I'm just not big on music that's 100% lyric based, I know a lot of people love that, but it's not my thing. I'm just more into music than lyrics usually. I would LOVE C+L if they were the remix and live versions of the songs, that 20 minute version of Blue Bucket... Holy shit
Oh man oh man, but C&L isn’t 100% lyric based! It’s so musically rich despite how sparse it is. The live versions are spectacular too. But I’m also very into lyrics so that helps for sure.
C&L is one of my favorite records ever at this point. I've only heard Illinois and Age of Adz (maybe once). I should probably change that, huh EDIT: Actually I lied, I must've heard All Delighted People at some point because Djohariah made it onto my phone. That song rules
Illinois is my favorite, and C+L and Adz are about on par for me because I like how they are both the more extreme sides of his sound. I honestly haven't listened to very much else except Seven Swans a couple times.
Thanks for posting that...provided some cool background info that I didn't know. Sounds like this album was a labor of love and symbolizes some really meaningful things for both of them.
He did some really cool things with the songs for the live performance. Still sparse in places, but totally different in others. The end of "Fourth of July" is bananas.
and the aforementioned 20 minute version of Blue Bucket of Gold... Anyway, if anyone hasn't listened to this live album, it's great Carrie & Lowell Live, by Sufjan Stevens
The live album is great. Forever bummed I missed his Chicago shows for the Carrie & Lowell Tour (I would have been at both had I not been away at school), so it’s nice that album exists.
I made it to the tour and loved it, but I'll always remember the show for dragging my wife along to the show not knowing his music at all. It was relatively early in our relationship and she was being a good sport, but she certainly did fall asleep halfway into it LOL. In her defense, she said the music was beautiful and lulled her to sleep.
I saw him the next year during my summer break so it sort of worked out. I went with my parents who had never heard of him before and who came to see Brian Wilson play right before him (at Pitchfork). They weren’t totally into it which is fine, now I know never to take them to a Sufjan show again lol.
wish C&L held up for me as much as it seems to for most. adz has had more staying power for me, of his "recent" releases. pretty excited for the prospects of this release though.
It really is a love/hate thing with Adz. I've tried so many times to listen to it, and I still only like maybe 3 songs on the album. Lots of people seem to love it, though.
I love Adz and would not complain but Illinois is my favorite album of all time. He should just do two sets, Illinois in full then Adz in full.
