this is one of the ones that doesn't quite work for me—it doesn't help that it's toward the end of a long track list. imo it's overlong for what it is (and I'm not opposed to long songs, "America" is great) and the gimme some sugar line is a little bit annoying to me
yeah I don't want to be negative but the only song I've really loved is "My Rajneesh" which isn't on the album lmao I'll still listen to this with an open mind - cos it's a goddamn Sufjan Stevens album - but my excitement isn't too high
New interview! Sufjan Stevens Ascends from the Chaos of Modern America The author of the article posted it in the Sufjan group I am in and clarified there was never a plan to tour The Ascension :( (the article makes it seem like just because of the pandemic)
I know I'll like this album a lot because it's Sufjan, but other than "Video Game" I've not been in love with anything so far. I think the hitch for me is, similar to Planetarium, nothing here feels incredibly new for Sufjan. The production is amazing. The melodies are good. I definitely enjoy these songs more than almost anything on Planetarium. But stretches of these songs feel overlong and nothing feels particularly profound in relation to previous works like Illinois, Adz, and C&L, which all felt groundbreaking in their own ways.
So. I listened to the 3 songs released on repeat in the car the other day. Idk, I think I’m trying to force my excitement a little bit. I’m just not really in love with anything here so far, I’m a little concerned. Glad some people are digging them though.
I love all 3 and the b-side, he just makes such beautiful music regardless of the style. Illinoise, Adz, C+L... all very different, but I consider them all beautiful. These new songs are the same for me, a total "mood" if you want to be cool like the kidz
Yeah, I love all three singles, kinda bummed others aren't feeling it but excited for Friday regardless
yeah this hasn’t grown on me but I am interested to see how everybody else feels when it comes out: Review: Sufjan Stevens’s The Ascension Aims for Great Heights but Often Gets Lost
I like the singles when I’m listening to them, my thing is that I haven’t really wanted to go out of my way to turn them on...if that makes sense
