Whatever happened to doing an album for every state? Did he just abandon it because it was so much to bite off?
Sufjan Stevens Calls the 50 States Album Project "Such a Joke" I was sure I read he’d also said it was a marketing idea he had and that he didn’t realistically expect to go through with it. But the article linked makes sense. Was definitely a bit ambitious. In hindsight it makes sense that he didn’t. His output and musical stylings are notoriously diverse, and he’d have had to do “singer songwriter” Sufjan for basically every album he’d release. And as we know now, that’s not really how he likes to operate.
Extremely surprised (in the best way) that he’s having such a high turnaround for releases again. The single was breathtaking and I’m sure the full project will follow suit
The title track is beautiful and one of my favorite songs he’s ever written. I thought I was acting like a believer When I was just angry and depressed And to everything there is no meaning A season of pain and hopelessness Made me cry first time I heard that.
The Ascension is okay, in the more bottom tier of my ranking but there’s still some highlights. In terms of post C&L stuff, I rate A Beginner’s Mind over it for sure.
It's a solid 8/10, even better if you cut like four tracks. Might not touch C&L but it deserves to be digested and listened to for its own merits
Go ahead and laugh, but Christmas Infinity Voyage: Songs for Christmas, Vol. VIII is actually pretty high up for me
It's hard to rank Sufjan albums because he collaborates so much. Do you include A Beginner's Mind and Planetarium? Sometimes I feel like the only person who liked Planetarium.
I’ll have to revisit a beginner’s mind because it really bored me back when it came out unfortunately
