Maybe I’m too callous toward super rich people but I didn’t find the episode brutal or very sad. More so just fascinating and enjoyed watching these characters react in such a believable way for all of them. I love that at the same time he dies most of the characters are just worried about stock prices, including the kids eventually. What a bunch of awful people haha. And I think this is going to be great for the rest of the story. I’m way more interested in this fallout than the same old Logan vs the kids

I think I was largely emotionally affected because the episode showed how human even they are, but how everyone in the sphere of extreme wealth has to push their humanity (and the humanity of others) down or aside in the interest of preserving their status.

if they were going to do this, im so glad they did it now so we have literally an entire season left to watch it play out rather than do it 3rd or 2nd to last episode and only have 1 or 2 hours of story to see how it unfolds.

I’m sure the rest of the season is going to be fantastic, but if I have one concern it’s that I don’t find the sale to Mattson compelling at all in the absence of it being a Logan vs kids power struggle. I hope there’s more to the endgame than navigating that.

I feel like that sale doesn’t happen and it’s the 3 kids fighting for power of the company.

Well it’s gonna be the challenge of navigating that while ALSO having the whole chaos is a ladder fight for the iron throne that we’re gonna see to be the next ceo of the company. We’re gonna see the siblings that have been United and closer than ever start fighting with each other for the top spot while also having to fend off Gerri, Carl, Frank, Tom, and whoever else is going for it. And they have to do all this as the value of the company tanks.

and since they’re all power/money hungry, I assume they ALSO try to do this while still trying to make Pierce happen too

is there any chance that the dead waiter comes back to bite Kendall/the family or is the whole point of that story arch that when youre that rich you get to get away with all that stuff? was Logan the only one protecting that little secret?

Colin also knows…also didn’t they pay off people at the venue who saw Kendall with him/leave with him to not say anything?

right thats what i mean, there are people who know but once news that Logan is dead goes worldwide, does it maybe resurface? im just spitballing, we all know something is going to drive a wedge between the kids/family/company and i think its gonna be more than just Mattson.

I didn't feel bad for them as people, but snook's acting auto triggered my human empathy

I also liked it for the reasons you outline, we don't usually see pivotal deaths in fiction portrayed like they'd be in real life

yeah the chaos of it all is what made it feel very real. you didnt see it happen, you just get an unexpected phone call, just how most people IRL find out about things like this. it felt extremely uncinematic while at the same time, being shot and filmed incredibly well.

I felt the same way I felt after reading about Ned Stark's death in the books. I read for like 100 more pages thinking I was being punked, but nope GRRM killed him and he stayed dead. Definitely expected Logan to just be sitting off to the side smiling at the chaos while they gave compressions to a pillow lol. The fact that they didn't show him for awhile also threw me off. Those bastards.

It'd be cool if other prestige shows and movies keep slowly moving away from the over the top, larger than life standard for storytelling as established by early Hollywood and moved closer to portraying how being alive really feels. I've been watching French new wave stuff and it feels like the goal there was to study human existence in all of its uncontrollable intricacies rather than telling a neat, satisfying, or profitable story. Which, if done right, is just as compelling as actually being alive is. Passing on a familiar or unfamiliar experience vs providing escapism.

For all the characters' separation from what a normal life is for most people, for how far they're trapped in the very center of the hollow bizarro world the United States is desperate to maintain, all that heightening and denial is nothing in the face of actual human certainties, and real truths.

It's probably been said before, but Succession feels like an observer's field study of American delusion, and the plot points feel like controlled experiments to see how the test subjects respond, rather than planned story beats. It makes sense with the creator and director being huge, unabashed Brits
