If or when the SCM guy does speak up about this album I don’t expect it to be all that critical/negative. He posted this write up back in July. However I expect the comments from his site followers to be complete trash.

On Sturgill Simpson Choosing Not to Make a Country Record

 

Oh it’ll be up on Monday - just a lot of weird personal stuff keeps getting in the way

 

Fuck genres - if the music is good the music is good

 

if basketball can be positionless, music can be genreless

 

I'm a few songs in and don't know how I feel about this one

 

FWIW I thought the first 4 songs were the weakest in first listen. I think the album gets better and better as it goes

Disclaimer: I still love the first 4 tracks.

 

I think it's gonna take some processing

 

Back half of the album is awesome

 

This album is fucking incredible. Need a lot more listens to really absorb the whole thing / wrap my head around it, but it is damn impressive.

 

This is so fucking good

 

I love the wilder, louder tracks, but right now I think my early favorite is "Mercury In Retrograde". So smooth, and such an earworm.

 

I haven't watched the movie yet but this is so sooo good. Fasted Horse In Town is an early favorite

 

the vinyl rules. i think my favorite right now is "make art not friends"

 

The melody of Make Art Not Friends reminds me a lot of Please Say No by JEW

 

i do not hear it but that's okay and fine

 

Mercury in Retrograde is my favorite but the finishing sequence of Last Man Standing > Mercury > Fastest Horse in Town is pure gold

 

The Paste reviewer is definitely one of the haters that wishes he was in the band

 

Last Man Standing is the first one I've heard a second time and it's good

 

This album is a gooood driving album haha

 

gonna fire up the anime

 

i wasn't expecting the opening sequence to look this lifelike

 

the cat setting on fire was not nice

 

This album just get better and better the more I listen to it. It’s such a blast.

I think Sailor’s Guide remains my favorite though - every time the horns come in on that album my soul leaves my body.

 

This is gonna be an AOTY contender for me I think. I love all the sonic references to different artists/genres, anchored by his as-always fantastic songwriting.

 

When the synths come roaring in around 2 minutes into “Make Art Not Friends”
