Anybody have the physical album and get the lyrics (if there is a lyrics booklet)? Some of these songs are real hard to make out, even for Sturgill haha.
"Make Art Not Friends" is a country music song and if yall don't hear it over the synths then I dunno what to say
Including the Alex Jones clip at the beginning of Ronin is one of the best parts of this record. I'm dying at that little easter egg.
Same goes for a lot of songs on this record. I think the whole "this is a total departure" take is a bad one personally (See: today's Rolling Stone review, etc). It's a stylistic departure sure but not a structural one, if that makes sense.
right, right. i could see him playing some of these at his acoustic shows no problem. but i “get” the takes, even if they’re bad, given how different the instrumentation is man. that boy can shred. Laur is SHAKING.
Yeah I get the takes but I still think they're wrong. Even a song like "Last Man Standing" has more in common with the rollicking honky-tonk of his debut than it does with the widescreen crooners from Sailor's Guide Killer record regardless
Anyone else who's watched the film notice the TN flag on the knapsack just before the "fuck all yall season" note? haha Also think one of the buildings they show just after that looks like the "batman building" in downtown Nashville
This is the one, and I rewatched that sequence and it's 100% intentional. The building that blows up looks exactly like it
Great review and reminds me: has anyone checked on the saving country music guy to see if he's alive? You raise a good point about his voice being part of what roots the songs in country music maybe as much as anything else
Just finished the film. I enjoyed it a lot, although I didn't totally "get" all of it. I also don't know the first thing about anime tho
great review craig! i really wanna know what guitar gear he’s using. i suspect i’m hearing a lot of EQD bit commander but can’t be sure.
Love this review - mainly the reason why I didn’t post my blink review and not because of my crippling imposter syndrome
Nothing from the SCM guy on Twitter about this album yet. I honestly think so much of what people think "is country" or "isn't country" is the voice, the production, and the instrumentation. Sturgill will always be at least a little bit country, because he sounds like a country singer whenever he opens his mouth.
