Mike's dad would 100% lose his shit if he found out his son's best friend was not only gay, but also in love with/had a crush on his son

if Will does come out I'd lay money on Mike being a total dick about it lol

not only is it his status quo but the Wheeler household seems incredibly conservative

I just caught up to the end of Part 1. Here are my takeaways:

-The coolest part of this season is that Hopper & El aren't able to help the kids via brute force this season. There are no cheat codes this time, the kids are left to their own devices, which makes everything they do feel much more satisfying.

-Episode 4's Venca sequence is definitely in the runnung for the best scene of the show so far. The fact that they picked a song that felt so epic and matching with the tone of the show without having to remix or add significant post-production is amazing.

-Murray & Robin are my favorite characters this season, every line of dialogue from them puts a smile on my face. Also, Dustin is a national treasure.

-Eddie & Jason are worthwhile additions to the cast, who definitely feels like real dudes I knew in high school. Unfortunately Argyle adds nothing to the plotline, despite seeming like a chill guy who's fun to be around.

-I think this is the most continuously engaging season so far. There are no drops in excitement. I think it'd be very easy for a show that continually balances upwards of 5 different perspectives to lose focus, but it really hasn't. I do admit that the scenes in Hawkins definitely feel like the A-Plot, but none of the other plot threads suffer for it.

-I don't love how the Mike/Will/Jon scenes are so sparse. Mike hasn't really been likable since Season 1, so I keep wanting the series to redeem him by giving him good scenes, but they just give him half-hearted dialogue scenes which kind of fall into the pitfall of telling, not showing.

-Jeez, the violence is probably way too much for some viewers. My mom really hates this season, because her favorite part of ST is the comedy & 80's nostalgia, and a lot of that gets pushed aside in service of Body Horror & Prison Break elements, and the kids don't offer as much subterfuge as is necessary to create a tonal balance.

    - I personally really love the Russia subplot, and the interplay between Hop & Enzo is really great.

-The big reveal at the end of Episode 7 BLEW MY MIND, oh my god. I'm so pumped for the finale episodes.

Loved all the backstory reveals in the last episode. Do we know any of this before or was it all new for this season?

all the stuff about 001 and the other kids was new if that's what you mean. and the fact that the gate existed before '81 when Eleven first contacted the demogorgon is new too

The timing of the opening of the gate is confusing. This seems to indicate El opened it in 1979. But Nancy specifically says at one point that El opened the gate the day Will went missing in 1983.

I'm pretty sure that gate was just a one time thing to push 001 into the Upside Down. El interacting with the Demogorgon and bringing it into the real world was the "real" gate that connected the Upside Down to Hawkins and created the 83 Hawkins time freeze thing. But the time freeze is inconsistent anyway with the school being decorated for the dance in season 2

Yeah, the Upside Down time freeze is definitely the biggest retcon of the season.

So, if the kids got their powers from One? And it seems the lab only tested it on kids, how did El’s mom have powers?

yeah there's a lot of stuff I don't understand yet lol. I think the gate that El sent 001 through and the one she opened when the demogorgon appeared are in the same spot? so maybe we're meant to understand that part of space was already weak and when she contacted the demogorgon it ripped open again, idk

I'm not sure the kids got their powers from 001, I think Brenner pretty much just abducts kids from around the world who are born with powers (like we saw with El) and then cultivates/trains their powers over time. I guess he needs 001 around for some part of that process, but I don't really understand which parts

In the trailer for part 2, it looks like the gate she sent 001 through is closing, so if that is the same spot as the season 1 gate then yeah they're probably going for a "the barrier between dimensions is weaker/got weakened here" kinda thing

Maybe it's a Palpatine/Vader type dynamic. One is the all powerful villain that doesn't really have depth or personality; the other is a less powerful underling but is much more complex, interesting, and has a personal connection to the protagonists.

Can't wait for part 2. Really love ST4 so far and the episodes didn't feel the lengths of their runtimes at all to me. Was a bit disappointed with the Hawkins lab stuff at first but it was worth it for what it led up to.

I also want to say that Nancy doesn't get enough love. She's such a bad ass, always bringing the fight to the Upside Down creatures. She's the Laurie Strode/Sidney Prescott of Stranger Things.

why are you all comparing it to lamer shit from the season, lol? Obviously it’s better than those things, it was so dope the first time you see it.

I’m just saying, if they wanted to go full NOES, have fun with the deaths. After the 2nd one it felt like a Mortal Kombat fatality cut scene. Gimmie something new!

One tells us in his closing speech that when he fell into Brenner’s care that he didn’t just want to study One, but also control him. But when Brenner realized he couldn’t control him, he attempted to recreate him. Soon babies were born. El was born.

while it does give give any details on how Brenner attempted to recreate One, this indicates that the kids were purposefully given these powers by Brenner. How he could do that without somehow using One’s power seems unlikely. How Brenner was able to take that ability and give it to someone else is unclear. We don’t know who any of the parents are beyond Terri, I believe. Could Brenner have somehow used Henry’s dna to fertilize an egg in various women in hopes of the abilities to pass on?

We don’t know why One had these powers in the first place. They just seem to exist in him. No experiments or science labs seem to be in play. So, genetics seems like a possible source and potential way of passing those powers on. Remember that Brenner didn’t merely abduct El. He was apart of Terri’s life and actually delivered El. This tells us that even before she was born he somehow knew she would have powers or that he could give them to her shortly after birth if they aren’t born with it.

taking her at birth runs against the idea that these are mere abductions of gifted children. And abducting gifted children doesn’t seem to fit what One says what Brenner did.

obviously though, One is a liar and manipulator. Should we trust what he says? Uncertain. But from what we know, his final speech seems to be him finally telling El (and the audience) the truth. For now, I’m going to take his explanation as true, but open to Brenner adding context or other aspects to it.

yea. I finished my rewatch late last night and noticed that as well. The shot with Brenner standing next to it with it looking nothing like we saw at the end of 4.7. It may be worth noting that that trailer shot and the ceiling of Eddie’s trailer look very similar. Using what appears to be a broom stick, Dustin is able to punch through Eddie’s ceiling to get to our upside down crew. This seems to tell us that the gate was indeed opened in 1979, but never fully closed. But also the Demogoron seems to be able to open and close gates as he wishes. So why did he need to use a gate El opened to first appear anyway? Did seeing El just alert him to life in the real world? Or did he somehow not have that ability until the day Will was taken?

    Seems likely
I really like Nancy. Despite her getting decent screen time this season I feel like something is lacking. And not a big fan of the she still actually loves Steve stuff.
