I already spoiled myself and know that Nice Orderly guy is One/Vecna and he's giving me heavy Tom Riddle vibes in these flashbacks.

I like that this season pretends like that shitty subplot from season 2 where Eleven finds another kid who survived and escaped that program never happened.

No, it doesn’t. It simply doesn’t explain when or how 8 escaped. The orderly mentions her at one point.

This season really said “you know what, Dustin’s the main character now”

I dunno. I think the focus shifts throughout the season. I think 1-4 is ultimately a Max centric story. From there El and Hopper are a bigger focus.

Max is the emotional through line and I definitely expect El to take over for the la last two episodes, and it might just be because I was most interested in the Hawkins story, but I felt like Dustin was really the one driving the plot forward

Yea… Will basically just moped all season. Mike had some stuff with El and then really nothing else of substance. Lucas blowing off his actual friends to become a cool kid was lame. A total kid thing to do though, but not very satisfying to see him to.

I have a hard time holding that against Lucas cause 1. the first time they showed Lucas prioritizing "being cool" over his friends was them expecting him to ditch the championship game (which is completely unreasonable IMO) and 2. the minute he learned what was actually going on he joined back up with Dustin and them. Letting the unnamed Hellfire kids get their shit rocked was super shitty, though I don't know what he was really gonna do besides basically beg his new friends to stop lol

Like I said, it’s a a pretty normal thing for a kid to do. He’s been benched all season. He wasn’t choosing the game to help the team, he directly states it’s to ensure he becomes a cool kid so he can make them cool kids by association despite Mike and Dustin giving zero fucks about that nonsense. From what we know before the actual game, Lucas chose to sit the bench at the champ game over his actual friends and playing their game that he would have an active important role in.

now he does end up shockingly playing and getting the game winning point. But that’s not what he envisioned when he chose the game over his actual friends. That’s kind of lame. Friends>sports/being cool all day everyday.

I don’t hold it against him. He’s like 14. Kids do dumb stuff and he does eventually see how dumb it was to group up with the “Christian” gang and helps his friends when it counts. But yea, letting the band guys get beat up and he just stood there was bad. But again, a 14 year old.

like I said earlier, it’s just not satisfying to watch for me. Especially when beyond all that, he has like 3 moments with Max and that’s about it so far. So despite being a part of more of the important stuff he’s not really that major of a player this season. But more so than Mike and Will.

I actually did forget about him being benched all season, that's fair. I do still think expecting him to drop out at the championship is ridiculous, but it's like you said. They're 14. Their priorities and worldview are very different than mine, someone in his mid-20s lol

I think this is my biggest problem with the season, really. There are too many characters and not enough story beats to divvy up between them. I know I keep harping on them, but Jonathan, Mike, and Will are like a wet blanket for this season. Every time we cut back to them, I feel like I'm just waiting until we go back to literally any of the other stories

yea, mid 30’s here, so not gonna judge Lucas too harshly. Just didn’t enjoy it, even if it is a very real thing a kid his age would do.

yea, there’s a lot of characters and even with the much longer season, not everyone is getting good stuff to do. The Cali group is the weakest link this season for various reasons. I wish they had more for Will to do then be traumatized for two season and then mopey for the next 2. And despite Robin getting a lot of screen time and actually has some good stuff going on with Steve and then Nancy, I honestly am left wanting to see her be confident in herself to ask out Vickie (I think that was her name) and feel like she could be herself. I want more Steve and Robin just hanging out talking about the ladies haha that dynamic was moved on from due to shit going down, and obviously being 1986 and all, like Robin herself says, if she asks out the wrong girl, she becomes the town pariah. Also would want more from Nancy and it not be all about whether she is with Steve or Johnathan.

look at me, saying way too much when I said I was gonna hold back. I guess some habits are hard to break.

Yeah I really loved Steve and Robin's dynamic in the first two episodes or so before they got involved in the Upside Down stuff again. Those two have great chemistry together. One of my favorite sorta-minor things this season is Steve making an active effort to not out Robin to anyone. Every season it's like they find one more thing to add to Steve's character that makes me like him even more.

I like the long posts ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Was bullying that bad in this time period or is this show exaggerating for dramatic effect? Because all of the bully characters in this are like extreme psychopaths

That one kid making Mike jump off a cliff or he'd stab Dustin or whatever in season 1 was so comically evil

  25. The one thing that is consistent is that the show is significantly better when most of the cast is together. The season through 4 episodes is fine but I can't find myself to care about anything that's not in hawking.
