wrapped up Insomnia tonight, honestly it was a pretty tough read. probably would have DNF'd it if not for the Tower connections and the fact that those only really come in right at the end lmao. kind of glad I didn't because the epilogue was actually really beautiful and moving (people who say King can't write endings are wrong). just a shame it was attached to the absolute slog of the first 500 pages and the intermittently cool and goofy magic system in the next 300. gun to my head, probably my least favourite King apart from maybe Cell

finished reading Salem's Lot again, still so good. insane flex for a second book. also the Jerusalem's Lot short story is underrated as hell, really creepy

it wasn't my favourite but I'm glad I stuck with it, so much stuff in there that blossomed in his later work. def feels like a very important early outing, and I've heard great things about Black House too

Wife picked up The Dark Half for me on a whim. I’ll get to it sometime this year.

The number of times people in this thread have skirted the edge of reading this book only to read something else instead is terrible for my heart.

I just read Needful Things and it made The Dark Half jump up to the top of my list, going to finish Different Seasons and then that's next.

Hell yeah. Can’t wait. I loved the fireman. I can’t believe that was 9 years ago.

liked Wolves of the Calla so much more on my reread than my first time around. I still think the reveal is pretty dumb but the buildup and character work is all primo King, it's definitely going up in my rankings

Song of Susannah on the other hand... even rougher than I remembered it. about halfway through and I'm really struggling, thank god it's short at least

I need to do a Dark Tower reread. I can remember pretty much all of the plot through Wolves of the Calla, but Song of Susannah is a total blank, and i mainly only remember the last like 200 pages of Dark Tower.

that's pretty much where I was at with the last 3 as well although I remembered the first 4 in detail even before I reread them for some reason

bits of book 7 are coming back to me now but definitely not the whole thing. can't believe I nearly finished this extended read in about 4 months, just have Hearts in Atlantis, Black House and DT7 to go

I'm halfway through Hearts in Atlantis so far and it's been absolutely incredible, maybe some of his best writing I've read. went into the first story expecting some more DT-adjacent horror, was not ready for one of his most beautiful and saddest stories

Yyyyyyyyesssssss! I think I’ve mentioned it a couple times in this thread, but that book was life changing for me and has stayed with me for years. Low Men in Yellow Coats is so, so beautiful and captures nostalgia and the loss of childhood innocence in a way no other book ever really has for me. The follow up title story took me a minute to adjust to but once Carol shows up and we find out what happened to her after Bobby left, my heart broke all over again for her and now also for Pete. The next story about Sully and how Bobby’s departure wound up being equally traumatic for him in his own life is just as moving and sad. The way King threads the needle through the whole book of this sense that his generation lost something, missed their chance at making a positive impact on the world, by tying it to a personal story of childhood separation and loss was so gut wrenching for me. It’s such an underrated book and I love returning to it. The film adaptation of Low Men in Yellow Coats definitely loses something by cutting out the connections to The Dark Tower, and it also changes the ending of the book with a grown up Bobby, but I’ve always had a special place in my heart for it because of my connection with the book. I think the whole cast is great, I love the score, and the cinematography is just gorgeous.
