I don't like to be negative and I am trying to be relentlessly optimistic but pretty much everything I've seen about the Dark Tower movie makes me really worried it's gonna be a stinker.
haha, yeah, in this case I'm just really hoping that the movie succeeds so that the full series can be fully realized. It's going to be bad news for the tv series and future sequels if this one bombs.
I can never really compare adaptations since the books are almost always better, especially something like this, an epic that took over 20 years to complete from goddamn stephen king. I do think they are going about it the right way, Elba and Mcconaughey are literally perfect casting, there's no one in the world better. And there's actually a narrative reason for the movies not to follow the books (which sounds weird, but trust me if you haven't read about it). But yes, I would LOVE for this to be something like Harry Potter, where arguments could be made that the movies match up to the books in quality.
I've never actually READ a King book but I feel like that's actually a great comparison based on what I've listened to. King just seems pretty long winded and detail oriented to an extreme and is pretty difficult those details in a film.
At this risk of sounding like the cheesiest person in the entire world, there's a certain King-ness that just does not translate well and no one can do it like him. There's a reason he's one of the most popular authors in the world. Joe Hill gets it though, I swear, beat for beat. Really lucky to have him around, haha. EDIT: Rob Reiner seems to know what he's doing too, ha.
just finished 11.22.63. loved it. definitely got me in the mood to rewatch and go back and read more again. as for Dark Tower, I read volume 1, and I want so badly to get into it and keep going cause I've heard great things, but I finished it and just didn't feel the motivation to keep going.
Called it. I consider this a good thing. https://www.google.com/amp/amp.www....e/2016/11/the-dark-tower-film-release-delayed
I think I'm gonna start it soon as well. Should go well with the season! It'll be the first BOOK by him too but not first story. If you're into comics read Locke & Key!
Amazing. Doesn't really bring the terror until the end but when it does it's King at his most terrifying. It's sort of similar to Joyland or Doctor Sleep, all about the perfectly crafted characters.
Finished NOS4A2. Loved it. If I didn't know it wasn't King himself writing, I would have believed he wrote it.
I remember reading that book and not only being impressed by the quality of the prose, but just the ideas themselves. There's so many neat concepts and plot points in that book that remind me how amazing imagination really is
The Dark Tower being moved to the summer makes me hopeful that, even if it's not great, it'll be successful, allowing them the opportunity to course correct as necessary. The first two Harry Potter movies aren't great either (although I still love them).
Keep going, I promise you it gets so much better from there. I was on the fence after book 1, but a friend convinced me to keep going and I'm so glad I did. Dark Tower is up there with A Song of Ice and Fire and Harry Potter for my favorite series. Book 1 is kinda slow and very limited in scope, once you hit book 2 new interesting characters get added and the story really expands beyond just a guy walking across the desert.
