Fairly certain that is not new information. At the least, I’m fairly certain we knew he was asked to at least write it.

yeah, i believe i remember hearing back as early as 2014 or 2015 that he was supposed to write a story treatment. could see them asking him to direct after Colin Trevorrow was let go, but obviously that was probably unlikely

Yeah I thought that was news back in early 2017 and he didn’t do it because he had to focus on the edit for TLJ. So they signed JJ in September of 2017 or something like that

Now that I think about it, yeah, when he signed on to write/direct TLJ, he also signed on to write a treatment for IX with the possibility of directing. Not news. But still a bummer he didn’t have the bandwidth for it. Definitely feel like the trilogy as a whole would’ve been more well received, had he been able to.

EDIT: Yup, June 20, 2014. Rian Johnson boarding 'Star Wars' franchise as writer and director

Knowing his process, he probably wanted more time to do it and Lucasfilm wanted to stick to the already set release date in 2019.

kids these days and their star wars, back in my day we didnt have stars because the dang thing hadnt been invented yet, instead we had to have wars in our own places, like my buddy carl and me went down to the laser store and picked out some blasters that really could do some damage if u knew where to aim, like han solo under the table when greedo was messing him around with missed payment which is also really annoying if you know what i mean because these days people just pay for thier stuff with credit cards ands tuff like that when back in teh good old days we paid our bills on time but in the galaxy far far away a long time ago they had "credits" and u dont even know what a credit even is, weird system they have in the star wars galaxy, maybe i can call george lucas and ask him, i also want to ask him about the test quigon did on annikin, remember how quigon tested annikins thetan levels and it was super duper high, how does that test even work, does the therin test check blood or something else, and how do other species also have thetans, how is that even possible, that would be like a monkey getting aids. weird stuff

Episode 7 is a tradition on Thanksgiving for me. I’ll never forget the teaser dropping on Black Friday. I was a barista at the time and I booked it to the bathroom in the middle of a massive rush. The holiday viewing really softens the criticism of the sequels. They have their issues big time but I still always finish TFA really enjoying it as its own thing.

TFA opening night was one of the most fun times I've had at a theater. I think I had a smile on my face the entire run time feeling like we were back in the Star Wars universe. Over time the cracks and faults made their way out but I still think it is just a fun movie to watch

Hindsight makes me feel like it was the /Transformers/ of the Star Wars universe up to that time. It was all about the theater experience. The creative team hooked us into that blockbuster hype but outside of the score and the communal feeling of the theater? It's not a great film.

I have great memories of seeing The Force Awakens in theaters. I can even remember exactly where I was when I first watched the trailer. It’s the only sequel I’ve been able to revisit multiple times. After seeing the other two in theaters, I’ve tried many times to rewatch them, but I’ve never been able to finish them.

The whole build up, theater run, and speculation after was peak Star Wars during the Disney era. Also rebels was out at the time. Going to run through 8 and 9.

Starting Outlaws finally. I’m impressed by how detailed and authentic the first canto area is tbh

Did 8 last night and 9 today.

8 is one of the best shot if not the best of all the Star Wars movies. I dont have a lot of beef with the deeper lore that most have. I think the fin poe plot is really bad. All of it is pretty lacking in impact imo. I wish the Rey Kylo stuff would have been centered around both of them training with their masters. Snoke ends 7 sayin he needs to complete kylo’s training. It would have been rad to have more Snoke stuff that fleshed out his back story. I would have loved if the Luke exile was from a failure of Ben being seduced by Snoke rather than the pretty lame moment of weakness. Him being exiled isn’t bad I just dont think that the bit they used was that resonant.

Act 1 and 2 in 9 are so dumb and fun. There needed to be more fin, Poe, and Rey before the last movie. Act 3 is so lame. In theory i don’t think the emperor coming back was off the table but none of it makes any sense and leaning harder into the dyad explanation and its implications would have been cool.

The sequel trilogy is a mess but there’s a lot to like and being a Star Wars Stan hardcore I’ve seen all the interviews, docs, and bts. I still believe 8 setup a really good 9 and surrendering to JJ being the director because 7 was so well received was a mistake. I would have preferred deeper force lore to a safe but lackluster ending. Also really adds to the sting Adam Driver was all in on a follow up and Disney passed. Still want a Snoke novel in the vein of the Plageus novel to flesh out all the bts on how he came to prominence.

Had to drop my thoughts lol. I will probably keep up the annual rewatch around the holidays.

Bringing Ben Solo back wouldn’t be the craziest thing this franchise has done. Don’t really see why people have issues with the idea that it could be possible. If you really want to explain why he is able to come back to life and others weren’t able to, just say it’s because of the Dyad or whatever.
