i've heard Lost Stars gets a lot of praise (and plan on getting to it after going through the High Republic). the entire story takes place from 6 BBY to 5 ABY (so inclusive of the OT time period), and while it establishes some basic worldbuilding for TFA (it was pitched as a loose tie-in novel), i hear it's far enough removed from the ST that it would probably be a decent read.

It takes place from shortly before A New Hope and covers through the Battle of Jakku. I don’t know the years off hand, but a couple years post ROTJ.

edit: and it is really good. Anything by Claudia Gray is worth a read.

also hearing really good things about the new novel Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear, which starts a new trilogy set after ROTS leading into the early days of the Empire's establishment, following Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, and Saw Gerrera. my partner almost picked it up the last time we were at Barnes & Noble, but put it back just because he doesn't know when he'll get the chance to read it.

also on the subject of Dark Disciple, it's in comic form, but if you haven't read it, Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir is another quick adaptation of some unproduced TCW episodes, and bridges his Shadow Collective arc in S5 and the Siege of Mandalore arc in S7

that's what i'm seeing on Wookieepedia, and iirc, the Battle of Jakku is about 30 or so years before the ST, so the only true connection is the planet itself.

i did really like her High Republic novel Into the Dark (and i've wanted to check out both of her Leia novels - the second being Bloodline), so i'm excited to read it. heard she's stepping away from more SW books now that she finished her last High Republic novel, which is a bit sad, but i get it.

All of them are listed are great (halfway through Brotherhood and Princess & Scoundrel are on my list). Personally my favorite was Leia, Princess of Alderaan. Claudia Gray is great and the story is really interesting building out Leia’s path to the Rebellion and seeing a lot more of Alderaan itself.

I’d also recommend Lost Stars, Queen’s Hope and the other Padme novels, and Alphabet Squadron. Lost Stars spans the entire OT and is probably still my favorite of the canon novels, also by Claudia Gray. The Padme novels have fun Clone Wars and Phantom Menace ties and provides a ton of characterization of the handmaidens, which was super fun. Alphabet Squadron is much more focused on the space combat side of things and is probably the darkest of the books listed. It’s a bridge between the OT and a lot of the Mandalorian/New Republic era stuff.

Lost Stars is a genuinely incredible story. Romeo and Juliet in the Star Wars universe. Absolutely a must read.

This is kinda what I'm worried about on that one, it seems a little... dry to me

I also listened to Master and Apprentice and I really enjoyed that. read Leia Princess of Alderaan and also enjoyed that one. I can’t remember the title of the one that leads into Rogue One but I liked that one too
