  1. They should have simply found people that know how to make a good movie

This Bond news got me wondering what a Star Wars film by Denis would be like.

I’m just disappointed we missed out on Rey carrying a double-bladed lightsaber. Given her experience with a staff, I thought we’d see her wielding one by the end of the trilogy.

    Nope

DOTF was also not that good, but it at least feels like it’s trying to continue that same story. Finn’s arc was a lot more satisfying in it. The Kylo and Rey storyline feels totally disconnected from what’s happening with the first order and resistance. And the Knights of Ren were also pretty useless in that one.

I love her final saber design, using part of her staff to make the hilt, but yes it would have been cool for it to be a double-blade

With all respect to Mark Hamill, that is bad.

And then Luke is so upset that the Force would resort to Women In Refrigerators Syndrome that he turns his back on it.

So that’s what 28 Years Later is about. Hell of a swing for the franchise.

I wonder if that’s what happens at the end of the movie. I heard it goes wild at the end with a twist or something weird.

I truly dig the vibe of episode 1

The set pieces and planets are great. It’s a shame the story didn’t turn out better

It’s the best of the prequels. Which still doesn’t make it good, but it has more life and charm and feels much less cynical than the other two.

Apologies for the length of this post, light vs dark and what it means to be a Jedi is one of those topics I feel I could write a thesis paper on.

To me, the light side and being a Jedi comes down to the choices a person makes. The light side is simply, as Luke says in (of all places) the Battlefront 2 campaign “The choice to be better.” If you are consistently making the choice to be better, to help others, to be selfless, the you are on the side of the light. It’s a variation of “Do or Do Not. There is no try.” That’s not to say that those on the side of the light cannot make bad choices or falter. Once you pass your trial, you’ve shown you can overcome the dark and make the right choices, but it’s a battle you need to fight everyday to continue moving forward and being better. That’s part of why I love the Luke arc in Last Jedi. He had a moment of weakness with Ben, but he learns it doesn’t invalidate who he is and the good that he’s done and wants to do. He just needs to learn from it and make the choice to be better from that point on. The prequel Jedi don’t always make the choice to be better and lose much of their esteem from the High Republic era due to making choices out of fear or complacency. While they are still on the path of light, that doesn’t mean they don’t lose their way at times and it ends up costing the galaxy dearly. This is also why Vader and Kylo are “redeemed” at the end despite what they’ve done. They both make the choice to be better and move to the light. It doesn’t provide forgiveness, but shows that they have put themselves on the right path, even at the end. Connected to this is the Gray-Jedi stuff, which I personally disagree with. The biggest examples I’ve seen given are Ahsoka, who always follows the light despite “I’m no Jedi”, Quinlon Vos, who without spoiling Dark Disciple makes choices, and Starkiller from Force Unleashed, which ends with the literal choice of light vs dark and sacrifice vs power/suffering. Choices in Star Wars are so often selfish vs selfless and there’s no such thing as being able to not make a choice because it will either be made for you or will present itself again and again (basically the entirety of Andor S1). If you’re not making the choice to be better, your still making a choice either to give into fear & selfishness or to abdicate/defer responsibility. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

People are way too attached to the “I’m no Jedi” quote. They seem to not be able to perceive the concept that perhaps later in her life she could consider herself a Jedi again. She is part of the group that Rey calls “all the Jedi.” She has more story to be told and it could cover a lot of years.

edit: don’t get me wrong. The quote rules and absolutely fits the scene she says it in. But that’s not the end of her story haha

TPM at least felt more "lived-in" than the other two - partially since it was shot on film, giving it some of that charming 90s movie "magic" that was somewhat absent in the other two

i wasn't as familiar with their philosophy until reading it, but Dark Disciple is an interesting case in that it depicted the Nightsisters as people who use the Dark Side more as a tool for survival than an exclusive means for selfish gain (i.e. the Sith). there's no grey here, they're Dark Side users for sure, and any use of it corrupts (which is why grey isn't a thing), but they're able to pull themselves back from diving in full-throttle (the consequences of which the book does a great job at exploring).

edit: i guess The Clone Wars obviously showed more of the Nightsisters in action than the book, but Asajj's speech on their use of the Dark Side was something i hadn't originally considered.

TPM is such a mess, but my hype upon the first trailer was so high. I was in 6th grade and a double edged lightsaber was the coolest thing ever

I believe it's okay to be selfish sometimes within reason. You can't always be making choices favoring others over yourself or you end up doing yourself a disservice.

I don't know exactly how this applies to the whole Grey Jedi thing if at all, but it's just in response to the whole "the Light means putting others over yourself" business. It shouldn't be a "one way or the other" kind of thing.

    there is one way out

It was soooo cool when it came out. Podracing and the Maul battles are the best parts of the movie.

I generally have a hard time watching episodes 1 and 2 anymore. There are so many long scenes of boringness.

After posting my EU novel list that I'm interested in, I'm also getting some interest in canon novels too. I still really don't want anything to do with the ST and I don't particularly want to start on the High Republic stuff for now either so this is what I potentially have so far:

    - Master & Apprentice (backstory on Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon seems very interesting to me)
    - Brotherhood (ditto with Obi-Wan/Anakin as master/apprentice, and I've read that this bridges from II to Clone Wars well)
    - Catalyst (I love Rogue One but honestly the premise of this doesn't seem exactly thrilling to me - anyone have any thoughts on this one?)
    - Rebel Rising (same as above - Cassian is by far my favorite part of R1 but I'd be interested in Jyn backstory too)
    - Dark Disciple (seems pretty vital to the Clone Wars/Bad Batch part of the canon)
    - Leia, Princess of Alderaan (this one seems really interesting in how it transitions from Leia being raised by the Organas to being an active part of the rebellion)
    - The Princess and the Scoundrel (not too sure about this one but I like the idea of it portraying Han and Leia's marriage - anyone read this one)?

I'm pretty certain that I want to get M&A, Brotherhood and Dark Disciple, but does anyone have any thoughts on the other ones I listed? Or any other books in the PT/OT eras that you'd recommend?

  24. Of those I have listened to the audio book of master and apprentice which was excellent, catalyst is really good and gives much needed background, and leía was great. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of those and I know people like dark disciple.
