for the love of God, get someone else at the table

edit: for the record, i'm not anti-Filoni, and enjoy most of Lucasfilm's output he's involved with, but there have to be more creative voices than just his calling the shots. the time periods and story arcs with some of these projects are either becoming too homogenized or trying to do too many things at once at the cost of effectiveness. not everything has to be like Andor, but not everything has to be like existing projects that aren't Andor, y'know?

$50 is steep for a 2 disc vinyl. Must be the Disney tax. I nabbed one though because if I don't now then I'd have to pay scalper prices on eBay. Not letting that happen

i'd chalk it up to both Disney and Mutant, given that they're carrying on Mondo's tradition of high quality specialty pressings. but you're right in that this thing will definitely go for a high price on the resale market. i guess the good thing too is that the folks at Mutant (back when they were still with Mondo) have always been cognizant of the demand for their records, so i wouldn't be surprised if they do another pressing down the line.

Is anyone in here well-versed in the EU? I stumbled across a few of the books in the store the other day and it's sent me down a rabbit hole of research and now I kind of think I want to dive in to it so it can be a headcanon "replacement" for the ST for me

There are a LOT of books though and I am a very slow reader, does anyone have any recommendations (or opinions about the EU in general)?

  14. you can’t go wrong with the thrawn trilogy and then specters of the past / visions of the future

shadows of the empire is my favorite EU book

I remember really liking the xwing series of books

Then you can get into the Yuuzhan Vong stuff. There are a lot of books but I lost steam and never finished them out. They also get wacky even for Star Wars imo.

i haven't read a ton of Legends myself (most of my experience with it comes in the form of video games i grew up playing), but i'd recommend checking out youtini.com. they're a database and review site for both Canon and Legends Star Wars literature, and they've got a ton of helpful reading guides and recommendations lists to check out either timeline. their big Legends recommendations are similar to @spiffa0 - the Thrawn Trilogy, the X-Wing series, the Han Solo trilogy, books on Plagueis, Bane, Kenobi, etc.

I made a list of books I think would be worth reading and follows the story after ROTJ. I haven’t read some of these in over 10 years, so I’m not claiming this is some definitive list, but this would give you a lot to read and you can check out other stuff if you want to. IIRC, the earlier published books were not super connected, but at one point they put in effort to reference each other more and began to do more series of books vs stand alones/trilogies.

    The Truce At Bakura
    X-Wing: Rogue Squadron
    X-Wing: Wedge’s Gamble
    X-Wing: The Krytos Trap
    X-Wing: The Bacta War
    X-Wing: Wraith Squadron
    X-Wing: Iron Fist
    X-Wing: Solo Command
    The Courtship Of Princess Leia
Thrawn Trilogy (Heir To the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command)
    X-Wing: Isard’s Revenge
Jedi Academy Trilogy (Jedi Search, Dark Apprentice, and Champions of The Force)
    I, Jedi
    Children of The Jedi
    Darksaber
    X-Wing: Starfighters of Adumar
    Planet of Twilight
    The Crystal Star
    The New Rebellion
The Corellian Trilogy (Ambush At Corellia, Assault At Selonia, and Showdown At Centerpoint)
    Specter of The Past
    Vision of The Future
    Survivor’s Quest

Okay, now begins longer series of books, generally. So I’ll list the series and number of books vs every title.

    The Young Jedi Knight (14)
    The New Jedi Order (19)
    Dark Nest Trilogy
    Legacy of The Force (9)
    Millennium Falcon
    Fate of the Jedi (9)
    X-Wing: Mercy Kill
    Crucible

There is also a short series of comics known as Dark Empire that would be worth reading after the Truce at Bakura. It gets brought up multiple times in the books. It’s not critical, but it’s a short series, so it’s worth checking out, IMO.

If you look at a list of all the books, you’ll notice I left out the Black Fleet Crisis trilogy. It was really bad. Not worth reading.

Darksaber was the one where Luke fell in love with a ship right?

IIRC, Callista was no longer in the ship. Darksaber is the second book of that unofficial trilogy of books involving her.

Dark Disciple audiobook has been fantastic so far, so i figured it was time to use my remaining Barnes & Noble gift card balance and pick it up physically (also been going through the entirety of The High Republic, so i picked up the next book on my list)

This is great, it's kind of a streamlined version of the overwhelmingly different opinions I'm seeing on Reddit for what counts as "essential" haha.

Do you (or anyone) know if I can just read the Jedi Academy trilogy without doing I, Jedi? After some of my research I have consolidated to this list, but I take a very long time to read books and don't have a lot of free time so any way I can cut this down would be nice - this will definitely be at least a year of my time if not more:

    1. Thrawn Trilogy (I see there is also a graphic novel adaptation and I am a much bigger comic reader than novel reader; I have a feeling I already know the answer to this question but would I be losing a lot if I read the comic version instead?)
    - Heir to the Empire
    - Dark Force Rising
    - The Last Command

    2. Dark Empire Trilogy (I actually already have these from when I was a kid!)
    - Dark Empire I
    - Dark Empire II
    - Empire’s End

    3. X-Wing (first four)
    - Rogue Squadron
    - Wedge’s Gamble
    - The Krytos Trap
    - The Bacta War

    4. Jedi Academy Trilogy
    - Jedi Search
    - Dark Apprentice
    - Champions of the Force

    5. I, Jedi (depending on what people say I might cut this one and only read the JA trilogy)

    6. Corellian Trilogy
    - Ambush at Corellia
    - Assault at Selonia
    - Showdown at Centerpoint

    7. Hand of Thrawn Duology
    - Specter of the Past
    - Vision of the Future

    8. Survivor's Quest

    9. New Jedi Order series
    - Vector Prime
    - Dark Tide (I and II)
    - Agents of Chaos (I and II)
    - Balance Point
    - Edge of Victory (I and II)
    - Star by Star
    - Dark Journey
    - Enemy Lines (I and II)
    - Traitor
    - Destiny’s Way
    - Force Heretic (I, II and III)
    - The Final Prophecy
    - The Unifying Force

Let me know if I should take this to the Star Wars EU subreddit lol

The Mace Windu book Shatterpoint I remember really liking if you're interested in periods besides post-ROTJ then you can follow up with Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor. I really liked all of the NJO and then the Legacy of the Jedi series personally as well. Some books are better than others but Corran Horn rules. Which reminds me, I, Jedi is another one to check out. I have read pretty much every EU book which is insane to think about.

This is the place to discuss this haha and to clarify, I would not say my list is the essentials, but cover all the major events.

I’d say you could skip I, Jedi. I haven’t read it or the Academy trilogy in a long time. But, IIRC, a decent portion of I, Jedi is a retelling of part of one of the Academy books, just from Horn’s POV vs Luke or whoever in the trilogy. It really dragged when I did my last chronological reread as it repeated that stuff.

I would recommend the Young Jedi Knights series as closer to essential than the other stuff you’ve trimmed out. It really helps you get to know the Solo twins and their friends a good bit before jumping into the massive New Jedi Order series. You do get some Anakin Solo, too. Having read those really heightens certain events in NJO. While not essential, they’re shorter reads than most of the other books and are solid.
