I do think it helps to again highlight Poe's bad leadership that he sent two inexperienced people on an important mission and they just got the only guy they could get instead of the one Maz says she trusts, but it does feel too convenient. I think if you had Maz being skeptical of their plan, but offering up information on someone who could help and then that guy being Benicio, that would beef up the set up too.

Someone straight up asked about National Treasure 3 at this shareholder meeting lmao. Jealous of all the people that got to see that clip.

No. Changing the course of the movie by cramming in a poorly written character and his unmotivated decision to accept money and betray the people that helped him in a matter of like, 15 minutes in the movie was bad writing. They could've had what happened happen in a much more fluid, believable means.

Yeah like this is one of the many unsavory character Maz has had to work with for one reason or another over the years. "Scum and villainy"-type guy. Theroux's character didn't really look the part. Plus it would underscore how inexperienced Poe, Finn, and Rose are because someone like Maz would have known to be wary of DJ's motivations/unpredictability, while they're too trusting.

I wouldn't say he's unmotivated, he's pretty clearly motivated by greed. He helps Finn and Rose for money, he betrays them for money. Poorly written and an overall bad character? I disagree, but sure. However, his character does have an impact on the plot and Finn's character arc, so I really don't think you can call him useless. The story and characters change as a result of his presence.

I just don't find him to have any weight in the movie except as a useless side character meant to fill in the patch of "why didn't they get the job done in time." Finn doesn't really change at all due to him being in the movie, he just gets angry when he's caught. DJ's scenario is too coincidental, his stutter is more irritating than character defining, and they also don't even show how he came to be in contact with Phasma/The First Order. So we are forced to believe he just went for a walk to find the first trooper he could and rat them out for money, without the expectation that he could get killed for escaping? (which is more likely than them being like, here's money you're our ally now). Did he get caught and pressured?

He just "appears" when needed to accept payment in front of the captors. Dumb.

It's easily become my biggest gripe with TLJ.

Finn actually does change as a result of DJ being in the movie. He sees what the logical endpoint is for someone whose personal ethos is "Don't Join" and it completely changes his outlook on serving a cause greater than oneself. The Finn at the end of the movie would not have tried to sneak away from the Resistance to go off and find Rey by himself, and a big part of that change is what happens with DJ. He's pretty crucial to Finn's arc in the film.

Also it's not really relevant how he got in contact with the First Order, is it? That's some weak CinemaSins-level nitpicking right there.

Agreed that it's frustratingly coincidental that they get thrown in the same cell as him. I can fill in some headcanon that Canto Bight is a good place to find a job like that because of all the rich people, but that is a personal thing and for sure doesn't excuse the actual writing. It could have been set up better. I don't hate the stutter, I'm guessing it's there to make him seem less threatening. But, if it wasn't there, I wouldn't miss it.

Do they need to show the exact moment he gives the Resistance up to the FO though? He's caught at the same time as Finn and Rose and he probably just tells one of the officers who captured them off-screen. Showing that exact moment when he rats them out would feel superfluous and slow everything down when the movie is starting to speed up.

My only worry about JJ ending this huge story is that he's pretty conservative. I don't really see him pushing any boundaries.

Today was an actual event in St Louis so it sounded like people from all over the US flew to be there... even kids at the meeting could ask Bob Iger a question. Pretty cool, not sure how any of it works tho ha

I'm expecting it'll be safer than TLJ, but I'm hoping the chances Rian took will have inspired JJ to take a few chances here and there. I can't wait though.
