new star wars wouldve been better without the old characters

the idea of a completely new trilogy is fundamentally more exciting to me

I'm not crazy about the way the old characters were included. I think Disney either needed to commit to featuring them more, or at least enough to give them a scene together, or leave them out entirely. Though, I also think they should've mapped out the basics of the ST before filming any if it.

I agree. Though, Abrams did have a story treatment for VIII but Rian apparently just tossed them to the side.

Luke's little wink to 3PO is perfect and I wouldn't have wanted anything else between them.

He got reunion scenes with R2 and Yoda and those were both perfection as well.

From Mark’s interview it sounds like Mark is the one who chose to do a little wink to 3PO and that they originally weren’t going to do anything at all until Mark told Rian they had to have something.

The Yoda scene in TLJ is one of the greatest scenes in the entire franchise, imo. I never thought I'd be so excited/thrilled just to see a puppet.

I love Mark Hamill, and I love Luke Skywalker, but there's a reason Kathleen Kennedy didn't hire Mark Hamill to write and direct Episode VIII.

If you read all of the interviews and articles about how he feels about the new movies - and not just the bullshit click-bait titles - he even basically admits that his thinking isn't the best way to tell the story, and that he's probably biased toward a very Luke-centric story. His actual thoughts about how it all played out are a little more rational and balanced than the titles of these types of articles would have you believe.

The one criticism of the new movies that I do agree with is I really wish that they had a solid story written for the entire trilogy before TFA went into production. I don't think they did. JJ Abrams may have had a rough idea of what he would have done with Episode 8, but I think that's as far as it went. The story in TFA changed very drastically all the way right up to shooting and even changed again with reshoots and stuff after shooting wrapped. I don't believe there were story treatments for all three films at that point even if they try to say there were. I know this is also kind of a Star Wars tradition, plus this is just kinda how Hollywood movies are made these days, but I don't think it was the best way for these movies to be made.

I have A TON of respect for Rian Johnson, but it kinda stinks that he was totally fine with Luke just walking past C-3PO with no reaction whatsoever until Mark Hamill put his foot down about it. It reminds me of how JJ Abrams had Leia hug Rey (WTF?!?) after Han Solo was killed and ignore Chewie completely.

Honestly, I never even considered the possibility of him appearing so I didn't have any thoughts either way. But when he showed up I was just so damn happy to see him. And the puppet too. It was a truly magical movie moment. Whatever else anyone thinks about TLJ, Johnson gave us that moment and I'll always be thankful for it.

Why do y'all want some grand story mapped out beforehand? That sure as heck wasn't what happened in the original trilogy, and whether Lucas had one for the prequels or not, they were BAD.

The original Star Wars went through SO many changes throughout the whole process. And, before Empire, there was another film planned that I think ended up as like a novel or something. And, those are the best two Star Wars films.

As a big Marvel fan... Making films around big stories instead of big stories around individual films is bad. Marvel's highest highs are where they let filmmakers do what they wanted, and their most tedious moments are where stories got pounded down to fit into bigger plans. It's good to have rough ideas for where you'd go with the next one(s), but your focus should always be the film in front of you.

I don't need every line of dialogue written out 5-10 years ahead or anything, but a general story line set in stone for 3 movies is what I would prefer.

You bring up very good point with the Marvel films, but I feel like you can find examples that go both ways with this idea. A big one for me is the quality of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy of films versus the quality of his Hobbit trilogy of films. Both of those trilogies went through big story changes all the way up through production and post-production and reshoots, but one of them stuck much more closely to a story that was mapped out ahead of time and I think it is *infinitely* better for it.

Once the LOTR movies were set up at New Line, they were always going to be three movies and they knew what the major story beats were going to be from the beginning. The Hobbit movies were written and went into production as two films, then partway through were changed to three films and a whole bunch of stuff was made up on the fly and it uh definitely shows big time on screen in the final product .

I am always all about the story, and more often than not I think movies and trilogies tell better stories when the story and script is written ahead of time and stuck to for the most part.

A good filmmaker can focus on the present film while being aware of an overarching story in which said film takes place. Lord of the Rings, for example.
