I’d rather watch the prequels than TROS. Making Rey a Palpatine was the worst decision in the franchise.

She is a Palpatine and the Skywalker’s are all dead, the Sith live on forever in Rey, and Anakin’s sacrifice meant nothing because Palpatine won. After watching TROS, the entire saga now feels like the Palpatine story instead of the Skywalker story.

Having Rey be a nobody while making Ben the main antagonist of TROS would have been smoother, IMO.

I think this is a bit of a reach - she clearly made her decision to fight for good rather than join the Sith, and destroyed Palp in doing so. Then, as cheesey as it is and will forever be, adopts the Skywalker name.

This I agree with. His redemption should have never been a thing, though I knew it was inevitable.

I'm not saying that the production of TROS wasn't a shit show, but this idea that everything about this trilogy was completely winged from the start needs to be put to rest.

Rian & Trevorrow were announced as the directors of episodes 8 and 9 in 2014 and 2015, both before TFA ever came out. The leaked draft of Trevorrow's version of IX is from 2016, three years before this came out. And if you read that, does actually flow naturally from TFA and TLJ. JJ and Rian have both talked about how some details of their script were adjusted to meet what was planned to come next. There was some sort of plan, but for whatever reason, they scrapped it last minute for this.

Now, why they did that, I have no idea. If I had to guess when Carrie passed away unexpectedly Trevorrow had no idea what to do about it (based on leaks of his later drafts). So Lucasfilm panicked, hired JJ, and gave him way to much creative control in order to convince him to come back for such a short production so we got this.

It was winged. There’s no denying it wasn’t. Each director changed where the story was headed for their own view of what they wanted the story to be instead of Disney/Lucasfilm knowing where they wanted the story to go before production which caused an incoherent mess The trilogy had no structure and unfortunately never will.

Sometimes that type of production works, like with the original trilogy, but in this case it blew up in their face.

still haven’t seen TROS but I refuse to believe there’s any way it’s as bad as AotC

I'm not saying everything was tied in a bow when they started. It clearly wasn't. I'm not saying it couldn't have been planned better. It clearly should have been. But I think given the timeline I mentioned earlier, it isn't fair to say the trilogy was completely winged either. I don't think that's accurate to say when creatives were hired in well in advance of release dates and collaborated with each other. The first two movies in the trilogy and Trevorrow's draft are cohesive and follow a natural storyline. This movie is the only one that feels "winged" and completely disconnected to me.

It's an odd standard to hold these movies against. How many examples are there of trilogy/saga type stories out there that are completely planned out? Maybe LOTR and Harry Potter, but those had the advantage of being based on source material. I will also never believe the idea that MCU is this meticulously detailed and planned universe. They just hire creatives that are better at riffing off one another. JJ wasn't capable of doing that for this film.

  9. Maybe Trevorrow's episode 9 would have made the trilogy more cohesive, but didn't it have its own problems? I'm having trouble remembering what little I've read about it.

Daisy basically also said there's no way in hell she'll ever come back to play Rey.

Oh yea, it's not a great script by any stretch of the imagination. But it's not as baffling and disconnected from what came before it like this.

This might be a perfect descriptor. I would like to see the opinion of someone who only watched the last three or this film alone.

Attack of the Clones, while bad, is at least comfy. I can relax on my couch while being entertained by it.

Man, that Daisy interview is something alright. The more that comes out the worse this movie becomes.

Attack of the Clones isn't even the worst prequel.

    (Revenge of the Sith is.)

But, yeah, I'll echo the "Rise of Skywalker is the most irritating Star Wars movie" take.

    I do not exist.

My wife falls into the former. She’s only seen the three (plus Rogue One & recently Solo). Tried to get her to watch the original trilogy and she just went on her phone. I was gutted.

ANH is a tough watch in an age of fast-paced, overly CGI'd Marvel crap.

Every time I watch ANH I am impressed by how well the scenes flow together. Just for that it is my go-to comfy Star Wars film.

For me it’s TFA. Just absolutely adore Daisy as Rey in that film. I’m inching close to like 20 viewings on that.

That original 1977 film is just such a perfect alchemy that never should’ve worked so well.

Which, is a topic that’s been talked to death, like everything else about this franchise. But, it’s nice to every once in a while forget the stories about how it came to be, & forget what it turned into... & just re-experience its magic on its own terms.
