I will not stand for this prequel hate, especially as it relates to all the lightsaber duels as they're the best part of the entire prequels.

(though I do concede some of the special effects on the fights in ROTS are a bit over the top. I know Yoda and Sidious are supposed to be the apex of their abilities in the force but some of it does look a bit ridiculous at times. I would have preferred a more methodical lightsaber fight, at least more of the pace like the Ep 1 fight)

    And of course:

I still maintain that the Vader going sicko mode at the end of Rogue One is the worst part of that movie. He was powerful because he never had to exert much energy, not because he was Jason Voorhees

I thought I was the only one who disliked that Vader scene at the end of Rogue One!!!

Now here's where I'm arguably inconsistent, 'cause I do love Vader in Rogue One. The way it was added last minute for fan service, & the portion of the fan base that loves it, make me feel like I shouldn't. But much like the Duel of the Fates fight, it lands in just the right spot for me to dig it. Each individual act of violence fits just well enough w/ something I could see original trilogy Vader doing. And, it manages to have some good style & tension, & feels like it's populated by characters (as opposed to the vacant video game characters of Attack & Revenge).

Oof. That last part of Rogue One felt like watching someone play Battlefront

This is the prequels in a nutshell. Some really interesting concepts, but just really poorly executed.

I feel like There’s a new class of Star Wars watchers that just don’t like Star Wars as an entity. They like pieces every now and again. Kinda sorta.

The end of Rogue One is great. So is Battlefront!

Revisited the Vader scene on YouTube, to see if I've changed my mind.

...nah, still dig it. I'll give you that it doesn't really fit the story & feels tacked on... 'cause it was, as I already mentioned. It'd be a lot better if it unfolded as a part of the mission w/ main characters present, maybe even being where one of 'em dies. But, just taken on its own, it is a good action sequence.

(Though I do need to correct what I said about "characters." Wrong wording, since they're all just nameless rebels, which is again why I think it'd be cooler if it were better integrated into the mission. But, what I was thinking & poorly described was that the scene feels populated by "people." Each nameless soldier feels more like a person than a lot of actual main characters in the prequels, lol.)

Also, I am incapable of talking Vader & Rogue One w/out mentioning that his "choke" dad joke unironically rules.

Duel of the Fates is definitely the best fight out of the prequels. After that it went all playstation game graphics. DotF still had practicality. I remember laughing super hard in the theater when Yoda busted out a lightsaber in AOTC. It just felt comical.

  21. I laughed at 7 because it came out of nowhere and looked cool. I laughed at 22 (last time I watched it) because it was the most stupid thing I had seen at this point in the trilogy and just looked goofy.

I guess the scene is kind of cool just on its own, but it is SO FUCKING RANDOM and absolutely 100% feels completely tacked on. Like it is about three steps less random than having a t-rex show up and just start eating people. You can literally feel the filmmakers saying "oh shit wait, the movie needs a shot in the arm - what is something Star War-y that people would just think is wicked cool to see regardless of context??? Boba Fett? No, not cool enough! Princess Leia wearing an absurdly small space bikini??? No, too tacky and very distasteful and disrespectful!! Salacious B. Crumb?? No, too specific and nerdy! Darth Vader just randomly but also quite violently killing a bunch of nobodies who have absolutely nothing to do with the plot of the movie??? YES!!! That is perfect!!!"

Yeah I wish more of the fight had them relying on their force abilities. They’re the 2 most powerful force users so it would’ve been nice to see them using that.

Slight push back on “absolutely nothing to do with the plot of the movie.” At its core, Rogue One is a movie about the rebels who gave their lives to enable the New Hope victory. Vader at the end there has nothing to do w/ any of the characters (& I personally typically care a ton about characters & care little, if at all, about plot). But, it does tie into the plot.

Speaking of plot, I feel like a much better Rogue One criticism than Vader or if the characters are interesting or whatever, is the way they make the Death Star weakness a conspiracy instead of poor engineering & hubris. That bit is a pretty obnoxious “let’s make this film in response to Cinema Sins complaints” choice.

Nah, we’re talking about things besides the actual movie this thread is for, which by default makes it an improvement for the thread, lol.
