That sounds much better than what we ended up getting, but I honestly fundamentally hate every major creative choice they made with TROS, so I really think each and every one of us could come up with a better story just spitballing ideas for like 5 minutes.

Any story that doesn't have Palpatine come back and make Rey his granddaughter would be a major improvement for me, no matter what else is in there.

I will say I think that story at least *attempts* to build off of the first two films and make it seem like it was one big story the whole time as opposed to actively working to undo almost everything set up in the previous film.

All of the talk about rushed production schedule and being pressed for time to hit a release date makes me wish JJ Abrams just stuck with this script but took over directing for Trevorrow.

I managed to forget that this movie existed for a few days, so that's been nice

Shit man if this is true then Trevorrow understands Star Wars way more than JJ does

I have no doubt Trevorrow would have messed it up like the "Jurassic World" movies. But it's still more interesting than what we got.

That's why I said a reasonably good scenario would have been for JJ Abrams to step in as director but still use this script / story. As terrible as I think TROS is, I still think JJ Abrams is far and away a better director than Colin Trevorrow, and Abrams & Terrio clearly didn't have enough time to write a good story of their own.

"your story isn't written by anyone else" would have been the ultimate message of the whole trilogy. goddammit haha

it’s clearly what Rian Johnson was setting up

Again, if this leak is true, they should have used Trevorrow’s script and had JJ direct it. Would’ve been great.

I have to read this whole script so I can just pretend in my head that this is how the story ended and I can just forget that The Rise of Skywalker even exists.

    1) Rey is not Palpatine's grandaughter
    2) Palpatine doesn't come back from the dead
    3) Kylo Ren gets to actually be the big bad
    4) Rose Tico is no longer a glorified extra and rather is a key character who is an integral part of the plot

This thing isn't perfect by any means whatsoever, but just those 4 points right there absolutely blow TROS out of the water. I truly consider points 1 & 2 to be fundamental flaws that kill this movie, but points 3 & 4 are pretty important too.

The Kylo Ren at the end of TLJ 100% would have killed Palpy right away.

Star Wars isn't a revenge flick. Ben Solo had to be redeemed by the end. Redemption is Star Wars. People don't like the notion of redemption in today's climate but it is what it is.

I don't have a major problem with Ben Solo being redeemed in the end, even if it may not be what I would have done. I hate that he was demoted back to second fiddle again right at the beginning of the film by having Palpatine return. I believe there is a quote out there where JJ Abrams says that they needed to bring Palpatine back in order for Ben Solo to be redeemed, and I just don't think that is true. That is just him saying 'we couldn't figure out a way' or 'we are not good enough writers' or 'we were way too rushed and this is all we could come up with in such a hurry'.

Kylo being redeemed didn’t need to happen. There was no redemption story in the prequels, why does there need to be one in the sequels? Redemption isn’t some integral part of Star Wars, it was part of the story of Darth Vader, specifically. That said, it could’ve been done well but it wasn’t. JJ/Terrio couldn’t come up with a good way to do it so they just forced it. But at the same time, Leia was always going to be a critical factor in possibly redeeming Kylo, so when Carrie died they probably should’ve realized it would be way harder to redeem him without her and just decided not to redeem him at all.

Some people truly are beyond saving, the important thing is that our heroes *try* to save them, try their hardest until the very last moment to drag them back from the brink. That’s a compelling and tragic story in and of itself. But this movie was written by hacks, so. Instead we got The Dead Speak!

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

use as many grain of salts as you deem necessary but The AV Club apparently independently verified that the leak is real:

Turns out Colin Trevorrow’s version of Star Wars: Episode IX was good, actually

as for the actual content, I mean, it's a bit of a mess, but that's not a huge surprise for a draft from December 2016. keep tinkering and reworking that up until shooting, I think you'd have something infinitely better than the script Abrams cooked up over a weekend that we got (not a high bar to clear)

I'm extremely curious as to what Lucasfilm thought unfilmable about Trevorrow's script. It wasn't convoluted enough? It seems just as fan-servicey (maybe even moreseo) as the final product, but a few tweaks and I think it would've something special. Should've just brought in Larry Kasdan for a day to fine tune it.

Still not sure Trevorrow would have been the right person to direct it, though.

It def would’ve needed fine tuning, but there’s a lot better about it than TROS. I agree that they should’ve had it touched up and then had J.J. direct it.

My guess is Book of Henry (rightfully) panicked Bob and Kathy, so they let him go and then reached out to JJ. Given the tight turnaround, they probably gave JJ a lot of creative control to get him back on board and this is what we got as a result.

But Reddit said J.J. had no creative control and he also hates all the parts we hate!

I'm just gonna say that I think the part of Duel of the Fates where the Resistance hijacks a Star Destroyer sounds cool as hell.

(And I thought Rise of Skywalker was a fun mess.)

Seems like Colin's script was heavily dependent on Leia as well. If this draft was turned in only a week before Carrie passed, Disney/Lucasfilm probably also panicked about that and realized it would need to be re-written top-to-bottom. Then in June 2017 The Book of Henry came out and flopped and ~3 months later in September 2017 Trevorrow was out. I wonder if he ever took a second pass at the screenplay once Carrie was out of the picture. I suppose there's a good chance we'll never know.

I'm still overall really happy with this first era of Disney Star Wars. I genuinely like/love 4 of the 5 films we got, plus there's been a ton of great content outside the films with Rebels, comics and books, plus the Mandalorian. That being said, a tell-all/oral history book about this era 5-10 years from now would be wild.

I think this is 100% the case. That movie was... something.

I would say the only great film we've gotten is The Last Jedi. Mandalorian is also incredible. TFA and Solo are very good, Rogue One is fine, and TROS is bad. Haven't gotten to watch Rebels yet but I'll get to it eventually.

I love coming into these forums now and seeing The Last Jedi being referred to as great. There was so much negativity in here when in first came out. Think in a year or two you all will look back and refer to TROS as great?
