Yea, the more I learn about this movie the worse it gets. The more I learned about TFA and TLJ the more I enjoyed them. So sad this happened.

they were worried that making Rey's parents nobody was TOO easy?? it's literally one of the biggest risks taken in a film full of risks! the amount of walking back of TLJ that this film does irritates me so much

thanks to whoever meantioned the Binge Mode podcast episode of this. The beginning was pretty cringe inducing with the way they recapped the movie, but when they got into the criticisms they made a lot of good points

As delightful as it was to have him die, it is an injustice that Snap Wexley's death got more attention than our boy Nien Nunb.

the guy who plays Nien is apparently on social media telling people Nien is alive, while the author of the novelization says he's dead, while the movie is too unfocused for anyone to confirm one way or the other lol

I honestly believe that the sheer amount of story points of the plot of this movie that have had to be 'confirmed' on various creatives' Instagram and Twitter accounts and the visual dictionary companion book and various other outlets that aren't the movie screen really shows how much of a storytelling failure this movie truly is.

In a universe where they can undermine the original trilogy by reviving the main villain for no apparent reason.....no. It doesn't.

I don't even know why you would box yourself in saying a character died when your own film didn't explicitly show it, complicating any future appearances in other content. Just leave it as unknown.

and what does that even mean emotionally if I have a connection to that character? I don't see their death onscreen, and then I'm supposed to read that they passed in an article? There's no emotional impact to that at all.

No one's ever really gone, so you never need to feel bad about characters dying.

I originally had a response to this about how I strongly dislike the trend of filmmakers just telling you shit from the movie afterwards that should have come across in the actual film but didn't - pretty much exactly what JJ Abrams & Chris Terrio are doing a whole lot of right now - referencing Bayona / JP:FK.

But I went back and watched the scene where the brachiosaurus dies on the pier while the characters look on, and sure enough, it rises up on it's hind legs and stands up pretty much exactly like the one Dr. Grant first looks upon in awe in Jurassic Park. Now I know all dinos like that will tend to stand on their hind legs in a similar fashion, but the angle and framing just before it is enveloped and disappears from sight seem to deliberately mimic the iconic shot from the original film.

I completely missed this when I watched (most of) the film for the one and only time because I was completely and utterly checked out from what was happening on screen. I mean, I picked up on the fact that it was a nod / call-back to that scene in the original, but I in no way whatsoever at all had even the tiniest inkling that was the same actual dino.

After going back and watching the scene again though I think the filmmakers did a fairly good job of subtly implying that was the same dino. It's done in a nice, understated way. I still think it's a little too understated in that nobody will pick up on it but that could very well just be my bias because I missed it. I don't really see a better or more effective way of getting that across short of having one of the randos in the film itself just say "Wow, that is so sad because that is the very same dinosaur that Dr. Alan Grant first saw when he dramatically stepped out of the Jeep and took off his shades."

None of this is meant as an excuse for the shit storytelling / filmmaking in Rise of Skywalker. More just props to JA Bayona even when he's working with material that is beneath him.
