I’m stating the fact that Abrams wouldn’t have brought back Palpatine if Snoke was still an option, which the writer even admitted.

But everyone else is stating “he didn’t need to depend on boring or nonsensical villains when he had the best option right infront of him.”

For a writer, that sure sounds like they aren’t very creative if that was the only option they thought of

How boring of a person must you be if you watch Star Wars and go, in 9, it NEEDS to be Snoke or Palpatine. And I mean, for fuck’s sake, they could have swapped out Palpatine for Snoke and done the same story. Apparently Snoke could have just made more of himself like that awful Dean Foster proposal for episode 9.

I’m not supporting that they were creative, just that Snoke’s death made them think they needed to bring back Palpatine

I mean, he’s right that Abrams & Terrio wouldn’t have brought Palpatine back if they had Snoke, but that’s a problem. That’s a clear shortcoming in them as storytellers & another example of how they were ill equipped to end this saga.

Kylo Ren, Hux, & the Knights of Ren (who Rian Johnson intentionally saved for the next film) were all you needed.

When I first heard about Ian McDiarmid returning, my initial thought was, “that’s a good idea I wouldn’t have thought of,” & honestly, divorced from what they did, I technically still believe that. But, it should’ve just been a spiritual presence. Mostly just a voice, maybe one brief vision if it worked organically. Snoke should’ve just been a Sith cultist who worshipped Palpatine. The heart of the film should’ve been Ben’s battle inside himself, like Anakin’s before him. A villain who could be saved by love over fear, reflecting the themes of the whole saga before it.

Agree with most of that. Before I saw the film, I sort of thought Palpatine coming back would be done in a more subtle way. Like he had used the force to continue his consciousness (a la the Jedi) and used Snoke and Kylo as a means of doing his bidding. My favorite part about what they ACTUALLY did with this in the film was when they showed that Palpatine had pretended to be Vader while speaking to Kylo. Having the actual Anakin reach out to him later on would have made his struggle more interesting, realizing he had been manipulated (and the title “The Rise of Skywalker” would have had meaning here).

But nah, the conclusion of the “Skywalker saga” was a very much alive Palpatine being defeated by his own descendant. Cool, I guess.

When you say factually untrue stuff, it’s embarrassing for you. Not an opinion, it really is secondhand embarrassing to watch now.

Interesting opinion on what’s “factual” when imo there has been reaching in the thread for the past 3 weeks.

Snoke was never gonna be interesting. The best thing they could’ve done is make him some kinda Sith cultist, as a middle man between Ben Solo & the teachings of the late Emperor Palpatine.

Making him the villain of the third film would’ve been a bad rehash of Palpatine. And, making him a puppet created by a living Palpatine takes away from the end of RotJ. But, using him as a prop for Kylo Ren’s arc, as someone for him to kill in the middle film, in a story where he & his general have an antagonistic relationship, where he also killed his heroic father, as a contrast to the love, hope, & unity of the heroes? If they’d stuck the landing, that would’ve worked.

Putting aside the fact that a lot of us hated the film, & you liked it. Since enjoyment & critical analysis are different things.

What would you consider a reach, & what about it is a reach to you?

  22. If you ignore the thousands of words written and linked to and talked about in depth to thematic and structural story flaws, that’s on you. Doesn’t make those facts of conversation go away. Just makes you wrong.

The things that have been said by the director/writer/etc themselves since release have been damning enough.

I dunno. I think saying separating Luke and Leia is the original sin of the saga makes total sense. It’s absolutely not batshit stupid.

I’d consider it reaching whenever people call the most minimal moments of the films as major flaws of the film just to add on to a list of reasons why they don’t like it. Seems like they sometimes reach to make it seem like the film is much worse than it actually is. That’s just my opinion, since what I don’t view as flaws others on here do.
