That makes it even worse imo, cause now this movie is just a commercial
Iirc the entire OT was based on the US in Vietnam, with the rebellion as the Vietnamese and the empire as the US

Nah, that's a given, it doesn't need to be part of his name. We know.

Episode IV specifically is way more Allies vs. Nazis. The fact that the Empire is all-white, calls their soldiers "Stormtroopers", and have officers dress in very Nazi-esque uniforms are kind of dead giveaways.

My point is just to say that, aesthetics aside, the whole trilogy was meant to represent that, rather than just ROTJ

I honestly can't hear what the say but I don't really hear "goals"... It sounds more like "ghouls" or "cruel" to me.

I'm saying I don't think it was. There was no "whole trilogy" when Star Wars was made, it was a one-off, so there couldn't have been a plan to have a whole trilogy intended as an allegory for Vietnam. ROTJ specifically fits that reading more than the other two, which I don't think fit that reading almost at all tbh, except maybe in hindsight.

  7. I thought it was "Knights of Ren....cool." because it was a prestigious group within the first order that storm troopers would admire

When I say “whole trilogy” I mean it was an idea he stuck with. Obviously the trilogy doesn’t play out the way Vietnam did

What elements of IV and V would you say support that reading of them then? Because I really don't see it at all. Whereas with ROTJ it's really obvious.

Lucas came out of the Vietnam era with the idea of the United States’ potential parallels to Nazi Germany on his mind and it shows up in the original Star Wars film. It’s a smarter movie than it can get credit for.

    Thesis: it’s about WWII

    Antithesis: it’s about Vietnam

Synthesis: it’s about Vietnam via WWII

A New Hope is a 1977 film about a war between a vast, imperialistic empire versus an underfunded resistance. Lucas uses Nazi iconography because it’s easier for audiences to identify good vs evil when they can attach themselves to Luke, Han, and Leia versus the masked Stormtroopers and Vader and all their marching and pristine uniforms. But in the final medal ceremony, he references Triumph of the Will but uses the “good” guys when doing so. With all the Nazi influence on the Empire, Lucas knows what drawing a parallel between Triumph of the Will and the Rebels/Luke/Leia/Han does, it’s foreboding and delineates that there is the possibility for even our heroes to turn into exactly what we’ve fought against. I have never seen Triumph of the Will and only really learned of its connection to the medal scene in that NY Times piece I posted earlier in the thread but it’s pretty incredible that Lucas threaded that balance between a storybook happy ending that works both for his simple morality play but also speaks to the larger political ideas on his mind at the same time.

All the more reason why The Last Jedi is easily the best post-Lucas Star Wars film at continuing to tell the kinda story he was telling (or, in the case of the prequels, at least what he wanted to tell), regardless of his personal relationship w/ Disney era Star Wars.

the best thing about this movie is the types of thoughtful responses it’s spawned imo, and the one above and the one @Greg posted earlier gave been the best

My favorite part of the movie was when they were on Pasaana. I truly enjoyed it and thought we were going to get a good movie. The Palpatine story is ridiculous, and the reason they are there is silly, but we get to see how truly powerful Rey is, and that's exciting. We get to witness this power as she physically heals an animal, and, a few minutes later, use her powers against Kylo Ren, but lose control of herself and kill a friend. I literally yelled "oh, fuck" in the theaters. It sucked losing Chewie, but we've lost a lot of people this trilogy.

Then, not three minutes later, Chewie is shown still alive, Rey learns of it almost instantaneously, and learns nothing. I thought the premise may be silly, but maybe we would get continuation on the cool character development Rian Johnson started, but it wasn't to be. That's the moment I realized, probably later than most, that this episode wasn't going to be a proper follow up to the first two. Within those 3 minutes, I saw so much potential. Rey is powerful and still raw. With both forces pulling upon her, how is she going to inhibit her darker impulses and desires? How will she do this with a 3rd party connected to her, pulling out those darker desires even more?

Obviously, we got nothing like that. We just got a single player video game on easy mode with no adversity, nor lesson, on the path to the boss. And then the boss practically defeats himself in a cut scene with little input from the heroes.

  21. Have not kept up with this thread, so I'm probably repeating stuff.

I have mixed thoughts. I did enjoy a ton about this movie, but ultimately it was a disappointing end to the trilogy and ranks only above Solo and the Prequels for me.

The saving grace of this was the Rey/Kylo stuff. I liked that they brought the force connection stuff over from TLJ and took it even further. I think Ridley and Driver both turned in great performances. Most of my favorite scenes are the ones between them. Did not like the kiss, though.

I loved the spooky vibes throughout, but bringing back the Emperor didn't work for me and just felt like more of the same. I like Dominic Monaghan, but just scrap his role and expand Rose Tico's. The new droid and Zorii were also unnecessary. All the Hux stuff was lame. Pryde was cool. Lando was fine. The Knights of Ren were wasted. Jannah was cool. I liked seeing that there were other deserters. Still, introducing all these new characters in the final movie takes away time from the characters I really care about. Babu Frikk can stay.

I did not like the shift/reversion in messaging. TLJ set up these interesting themes of the Jedi's legacy of failure, the force not belonging to the Jedi, and the idea that it doesn't matter where you come from and bloodlines don't determine your worth. TRoS went with the more conventional deification of the Jedi, good vs evil, and bloodlines determine your worth and give you powers. There's still a nice message of "It doesn't matter what you're born into, but who you choose to be" in there, but it's just less interesting than what Rian Johnson brought to the table.

I keep thinking of that terrible expository scene where Oscar Isaac is trying his damndest to make the best of the material and laughing at the absurdity of it.

Poe: “Well folks, looks like it’s true. Palpatine’s back, can you believe it?”

    *Everyone onscreen groans*

    Me: “I know, right?”
