Only if you think all criticism sounds the same, which is something I'm gonna respect you enough to assume you don't actually believe.

The only similarity, which is also similar to people who hate the prequels or anything else under the "Star Wars" banner, is that because people love this franchise, when it doesn't work, there's an added layer of relationship that makes it easier to fixate on instead of just washing your hands & walking away.

But, the actual what & why of TRoS hate vs TLJ hate is pretty fundamentally different.

See, that's a problem to me, lol. I feel like Wookieepedia represents a lot of my least favorite aspects of Star Wars fandom. Not because it's bad having a fan encyclopedia of everything (I was just reading about some other Naboo queens yesterday, lol), but because overexplaining has sucked a lot of the mystique out of the universe & has become a substitute for storytelling.

That being said, the one thing I like about the potential (more than execution) of the prequel/spinoff concept is that they can flesh characters out more. Again, not in the Wookieepedia way (that was a big issue I had w/ Solo), but just in getting more of a chance to connect w/ a character & their personality, motivations, & relationships.

Well, TLJ did something that no other SW before it did: it had a message. You can be "no one" and still be special. Just because you used to be a hero doesn't mean you can always be relied on to save the day. Who really are the good guys and bad guys?

I think a lot of people didn't like TLJ because it (allegedly) focused too much on the messages it wanted to convey, and not enough on the action/surface level action plot that SW had been up to that point.

I think TROS is the opposite. People who didn't like TLJ are glad we are back to mindless action and shiney lightsaber battles and bloodlines being cool twists. TLJ fans are mad that the plot and especially underlying themes are paper thin/borderline problematic.

I'm not gonna argue that the execution wasn't awful, but what execution wasn't awful? lol. And, the space horse thing is clearly just an aesthetic taste thing we ain't gonna agree on.

I think I've said this here a few times already, but for me, Jannah & that whole ex-trooper angle was a well that I actually would've enjoyed dipping into more. As it is in the film, it's just used as a lame "hey, we're similar, I like you" way. But, between Finn's arc in the prior films & the tease of a First Order spy (who should've been Jannah or a friend of hers), there was a pretty interesting trooper story there to explore, which could've culminated in some troopers in the third act switching sides in the middle of the battle. The upper end of that potential is higher for me than the highest potential of any other addition.

there's a bit of a weird trend I've noticed where people are saying TLJ is the first Star Wars movie that tries to say something and that's not correct

I don't wanna dunk on you or do some kinda dumb "gotcha" or whatever lame message board impulse, lol. But I do wonder if you didn't word what you really meant that well originally?

TPM had the best message of the entire SW saga.

The entire OT is a cut and dry hero’s journey about exploring the unknown and confronting your demons and overcoming them. If that’s not a message I don’t know what is.

In Return of the Jedi, Lucas based Palpatine off of Nixon & the Ewoks off of Vietnam. The latter of those comparisons feels a little, um... problematic? But, it's super dope that, in those original films, Lucas was getting us to root against a space America that was also space Nazis.

That, Padme in Phantom Menace, & Canto Bight in Last Jedi really paint a galactic political system that we unfortunately probably won't see explored any time soon by The Walt Disney Company.

I liked Lucas attempting to go somewhere towards a message with the entire co-dependence of Naboo royalty and Gungans, and that democracy itself can be complex and completely corruptible.

It’s empty enough to where you have to look for it but, as a fan of subtle messages in the early Godzilla films, I appreciate the attempt that was made.

has this been posted in here before? this is a really good video that actually made me appreciate what George was clearly trying to go for with the prequels, despite failing horribly in the execution

if it's a trilogy, can you save them up and use them all for the last film?

lmao. If they saved that for a throwaway line at the very end of the saga I’d honestly forgive everything else in the movie

I enjoyed Argo a lot, but Chris Terrio is really on a screenwriting tear for the ages with Batman v. Superman: The Dawn of Justice, Justice League and now Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.
