Anyways, yeah, The Phantom Menace is more enjoyable than this film.

Watched the hour long documentary about the making of the film last night, & it made me wonder what a George Lucas film would be like today. I'd love to see him chase some of the things James Cameron, Ang Lee, & Peter Jackson have in the past decade... even though I don't necessarily like those films, lol. But, as much as Lucas sucks as a storyteller, dialogue writer, acting director, etc., he does have a certain pulp sensibility that I like, so if he kept chasing filmmaking technology in a sci-fi context, it'd at least be interesting to me.

I don't buy that they had to cut Rose Tico's scenes against their will. As someone else said, it just doesn't pass the smell test for me.

As anthony pointed out, there are actually tons of fantastic aspects of TPM, and the prequels in general, put together in a completely incompetent way. There are also a lot of bad things in them as well.

Qui-Gon Jinn is phenomenal. Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor certainly came through George Lucas' directing style much better than some of the other actors.

Ewan is largely not good/wasted in TPM. He elevates Episodes II and III, however he does so in spite of the material and through the sheer force of his natural charisma/uncanny affinity for the role alone.

Stop editing my posts in the quote you bully. I would never, ever make an error like that. And everyone knows it. Guess we know now who the real phantom menace is huh.

I honestly like Natalie Portman in The Phantom Menace more than Liam Neeson.

It's easy to be critical of her because of the awful plot & dialogue given to her in those next couple films, but before the throwback-in-the-bad-way romance, she was honestly giving one of the better performances an actor has given in a Lucas film. I really bought into her as a royal child disgusted by the political landscape she's been thrust into. Based on the quality of her "this is how liberty dies" moment later on, if she'd been able to continue that thread more & play off of Hayden's misguided creepiness less, she'd probably be remembered as the star of those films.

And, yeah, I agree that Ewan wasn't great in Phantom & didn't come to life until the next two. Which is a bummer 'cause those are a lot worse than Phantom. Hope he's able to have as much fun in the Obi-Wan series.

I always get the impression watching the prequels that some of the actors were able to just direct themselves so-to-speak performance wise - like Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor - while the actors who sought a lot of guidance and direction from George Lucas on their performances ended up kinda stranded.

George is notoriously not an actors' director so it's very likely the cast was expected to come up with a lot of their characters' personalities all on their own. For a pro like Neeson, that isn't necessarily a problem, but for relative newcomers like Hayden it's a big, big issue.

I gotta disagree with the Liam Neeson thing. His performance as Qui-Gon is one of my favorite things from all of Star Wars.

He's fine, I guess. Top 5 prequel performances, maybe? Ewan, Natalie, Ian, Anthony... then maybe him? Or, honestly, maybe Ahmed, who brought so much energy to such a misguided character concept, lol.

Oops. I went from "Natalie > Liam" to "Ahmed > Liam." My accidental unpopular opinions just won't quit.

Anyways, I guess I get why people like him, but I honestly think he's mostly a bit too stoic for my liking. On my most recent watch, I did appreciate how that stoic performance w/ his writing makes him feel like one of those proper, established religious types who can play the game but lowkey have a more sincere heart underneath. But, I just don't love it as much as a couple other gems that I like defending.

I’m seeing this again today at 5:30. I haven’t watched it since the Thursday that it came out. This time we got D-box seats (the seats move with the movie and space movies are best for them).

This is the most nitpicky of things wrong with the movie, but Exegol is possibly the worst planet name in these films. It sounded so unnatural coming out of all these actors

But because it was squandered it seemed even more fucking random. Their convo about their similarities literally had me laugh out loud...as did the horses on the ship (but you clearly liked that). It was just so overstuffed and random it’s hard to pick but for some reason this one bothered me the most.

You're lying to yourself if you think we aren't going to revisit most of these characters again in either new TV shows or new movies.

haha, touche. Seriously though, I watched TPM recently and Padme/Queen Amidala are the 2nd worst part of that movie. You know what number 1 is.
