In general, I just hate hate haaaated this movie so very much the first viewing. Somebody said they left the theater in shock, I think I did too.

But the second time I watched it I cried and cried and cried and just loved the storytelling and every second Rey was on screen I felt like I could take on the whole Empire myself.

When wrestling with my disappointment and disaffection, I remembered “only a sith lord deals in absolutes”.

And like Obi Wan Kenobi says, “you’re going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view”

If we want to see a disaster, we will find a disaster; if we want to use this blessed mess to understand ourselves better, we can.

  2. It's unfortunate that we are moving toward this big budget entertainment monolithic monopoly that squeezes all risky choices or daring decisions out in favor of fan service. ;-p

there’s zero chance any of these studios would take a chance on characters as “big” as poe and finn kissing.

put big in quotes bc as much as that statement is true, all we’ve talked about the last two movies is how small their roles have been lmfao

You can certainly be entertained by parts of this movie, but you can’t argue that it isn’t an incoherent mess. Using quotes from other films can’t save this one

I told people I wanted that and they just saw its too much like Harry Potter.

Could have been cool if "all" the sith in Palps lightning were fighting all the jedi ghosts.

That's way below what TLJ did so seems like the fan service approach backfired

The mental gymnastics people are doing to enjoy this movie are crazy. It’s okay to admit it’s bad.

I even left the theater thinking "I liked it....I guess. But it was kind of a fucking mess". But still I haven't had a single moment since where I've felt like going to see it again. Especially after having many of my concerns echoed by tons of people.

It’s certainly one heck of a mess. Personally, I like messy things, sometimes even more than clean things. It reminds me of Jean Luc Godard’s ideas about active and passive media experiences.

Messy things demand active participation from us, they require us to squeeze our flabby lil brains and wonder why and wtf and huh, and in doing so we develop an interior design of our own and deepen our relationship to the world around us.

I think for me, Star Wars has held my attention for almost 30 years precisely because its such a thoughtful, incoherent mess. There are so many ideas percolating, so many loose ends and question marks, so many wait wtf moments. The contradiction and confusion is an open invite to wonder on my own.

I remember the experience of being a young Star Wars fanatic in the 90’s and we would make fun of it just as much as we would love it. The contronymity of experience was and is the reward.

If ya don’t like it, then you don’t like it. Ain’t no thang.

I feel like this movie relies on the audience not thinking. That’s why it jumps and cuts to one maguffin after another so quickly that first half. It keeps throwing things at you so you forget about the last thing that didn’t make sense or was absurd if you think about it.

I felt that way the first go around, less so the second time.

Still, it’s riddled with contrivances that are all totally deserving of ridicule, I just find it satisfying to exercise some balance of my opposing urges. And the the bile side of things is well represented in the convo here

It became more obvious the second time that was what was intended. Having already seen it, the flaws stuck out all the more.

I feel like the discussion here has been pretty calm. Is it negative? Oh yea. But I don’t think anything has been heated or anything.

It's also okay to enjoy it. It's okay to live your life trying to see the good in things instead of focusing on the bad. Not everyone has to be a critic.

I don’t think it’s fair or accurate to say come one is a critic if they didn’t like a movie for its very obvious flaws. Or to say critic like it’s a negative thing.

I think part of being a good critic is ripping things apart and also putting in the effort to reassemble what you hate.

It’s kinda myopic thinking to glue yourself in place.

  24. Thinking about this movie/sequel trilogy I feel like it’s so similar to the Dark Knight Trilogy:

1st movie sets up the universe
2nd movie uses elements from the first but not necessarily a “direct” sequel
3rd sort of ignores the previous movie in an attempt to come full circle on the 1st movie and close out the trilogy.

TROS gave me similar feelings as TDKR - I enjoyed the emotional beats mostly but the logic quickly falls apart.

A major positive for me was the comedy. I enjoyed all the bickering and quips and stuff. Almost all of it got a chuckle out of me.
