With regards to Rey in this movie, I genuinely thought they were going "reveal" or at least imply that she was basically the force incarnate (similar to Anakin in a way). Something to make her more special without saying she had a special bloodline and still keeping most of the themes in tact. I kind of saw it coming that her parents weren't actually pieces of shit and probably left her to protect her, but I still thought it would be more of the force choosing her at random.

Having Anakin's lightsaber speak to her when she touched it, her special connection to Kylo, her visions in the cave with a bunch of duplicates of herself, her ability to do the Jedi mind tricks despite never having know that was even a possibility... I really thought they were hinting at her essentially being one with the force if not an actual reincarnation. I mean, I guess they did end up doing something similar at the end of the movie with the whole "I am every Jedi who has ever lived" thing, but her being Palpatine's granddaughter sort of takes the wind out of that sail to a certain extent.

I was thinking more Avatar: The Last Airbender with that. Every past life giving their power for a "Jedi State" move.

    Re: Finn’s force sensitivity, it’s “clarified” several times elsewhere;

He says to Poe “you don’t understand what Rey’s going thru” and that he does. And Leia does.

    Finn feels Leia’s death.

I (using the force) feel like there are others but my vision is cloudy on this matter

Yeah I thought this was where it was going too. Like it was going to be revealed that the reason it seems like the Skywalkers have such a massive influence on the galaxy is because the Force creates an embodiment of itself to keep balance, kinda like the Avatar in TLA/LOK, and the Skywalkers are intrinsically tied to this.

it’s not perfect but it would’ve been something more to work with

Oh yea, I don’t think most people are confused about whether he has the force or not. Just if that’s what he was going to tell Rey

    Regarding Rey Skywalker...

I too would prefer the story of Rey Nobody, but it is what it is (til it ain’t) and Rey Skywalker bookends the sequel series harmoniously.

When we meet Rey in Force Awakens her first interaction is the mirror moment with the old woman polishing scrap metal, Rey seeing her future here on Jakku.

And the trilogy ends on Tatooine with her encountering a similar old wayfarer, this time not seeing herself mirrored in the example in front of her, but defining her own destiny as Rey Skywalker.

Rather than inherit the life she’s been given, she chooses her identity.

To me, the particularities of Rey Nobody and Rey Skywalker are different, but the thematic beat is pretty similar.

I think because, like he says to Poe later, “you wouldn’t understand”.

Mystery box reasons certainly abound, but there is a legible diegetic context to the dialogue.

I feel that, I suppose I feel it as a feature of effective breadcrumb storytelling tho, which I realize isn’t how many folks are reacting.

I hate hate hated the choice my first go around, but it does make sense and it doesn’t bother me after a second viewing.

Yeah I don't really know or care whether Finn is force sensitive or not - I am only saying that having that be what Finn desperately wants to shout to Rey when he thinks they are about to die makes no fucking sense whatsoever. That is obviously not what was being intended with that scene, no matter what they shuffled everything around to mean later.

Before this movie, I had a theory that Rey was Anakin Skywalker reincarnated, but this time to do it the right way.

Kylo trying to be his grandfather and Rey actually being his grandfather would've been crazy, but I welcomed the idea in a way as farfetched as it sounds.

I also said after seeing The Force Awakens that she was a Palpatine. It was my first thought and then I had other theories I would think about.

I think, based on this movie alone, it being he has the force is the obvious answer. But based on their journey through TFA and TLJ, it being his love for her makes sense.

  20. I think Rey being a Palpatine or a Kenobi were the most common "guesses" after the first movie. Which is why movie by Reddit-thread is probably not the best recipe.

I like when they had that fight there, and Finn says “damn right yr not leia,” and then nothing happens from there

Really thought they were going to right at the end. They really made it seem like they were going to.

So did Oscar Isaac . I can’t seem to find the clip. But he said he thought they should do it, see what’s it’s like for two men to fall in love during wartime because it would be progressive. Then he cuts himself off and says no, not progressive, it would just be of the times. But the Disney overlords didn’t want to do it.
