Nice reminder of why making Rey Palpatine’s granddaughter does go back on the themes of TLJ, as I’ve seen some argue that it doesn’t.

I’m 20 minutes in. Mike’s thoughts on Palpatine being a clone in the movies we have seen were interesting, but I have no idea where he got the idea.

but I like that there was confusion over whether the Sheev we see here is OG or a clone.

As a “nobody” ever saved the galaxy during the Skywalker saga? Maybe Jyn in Rogue One counts. Other than that it seemed like the general theme during the Skywalker is family, which I’m glad they continued and used to close the saga.

This movie was so insulting and cynical that I might never watch it again.

But what does it even say about family? Is there any message? I would be fine with the movie being about family if there were any meaning behind it but this seems to be “these people are related because we need twist after twist to distract from there being no story.” In the OT, Vader tempts Luke because Luke wants familial connection. Palpatine kills Rey’s parents— what’s his plan? Why should she join him? Did he ever want her to join him or was that part of his less than elaborate plan?

    “Skywalker family” isn’t a theme

Someone should buy Chris Terrio an Occam's Razor for Christmas.

Dang it, why won't this film leave me alone.

  13. Closing out an entire saga that’s been around and beloved since the 70s was an impossible task to begin with.

family isn't a theme here, it's a cop out plot device that is used and beaten to death to give the storywriters an out. Rey being a palpatine, while not shocking that they went that way, it one of the more disappointing elements to this entire saga and franchise.

Wait, you're telling me "plot" & "theme" mean different things?

Family itself is. It’s not exclusive to the Skywalker family, even though the Saga is mostly about that bloodline. The Skywalker saga is ultimately about your bloodline or family either correcting what the previous generation failed at or vice versa.

It’s definitely a theme imo, whether you liked the outcome or not.

When Palpatine sucked the life out of Rey & Ben, I think he also sucked it out of me.

I think Palpatine's design where he was dangling off that apparatus looked fucking sick tho, def one of the highlights of the film for me.

Just in general it LOOKED incredible.

The theme of family and bloodlines is more based on Rey’s pov and journey rather than Palpatine’s. I mean look at the sequel trilogy, Rey is searching for a family she never knew about. Which ultimately ends up being Palpatine and she makes chooses to go against the only remaining living relative, ending with her adopting the name of those who she felt was her true family, the Skywalkers, in a sense. It makes sense to me that family is a recurring theme in the saga.
