I don’t know if we will ever know for sure. But I am gonna guess that going back to the Death Star 2 was 100% a Trevorrow idea and a big reason why he still gets story credit.

he did the same thing in The Lost World.

I tried so many mental cartwheels to convince myself the rey parents thing was actually ok before finally giving up.

You can call it contradicting himself to be generous, or, especially in the case of Khan, it could be called “lying to your audience to preserve your dumb twist”

We don't know his son didn't have it. Just that he chose not to

  5. Rey’s moment of anger causing force lightning to come out and blow up a ship never being reckoned with is such a weird story choice.

I hate how much of this movie asks me to just not think about it. When done a little, totally fine, when done all the time it pulls me out.

Emperor shoots lightning and disabled ships for like a minute and they fall but even in that moment I didn’t feel any fear for the heroes. I don’t even remember why they get the power back now (woulda sucked if he fried a fuse and the movie just ended there).

Sure we do. Palpy didn’t use him as his new body. Why wouldn’t he if his son had the force?

  7. And not learning from your mistakes.

  8. If Palps was behind it all he probably shoulda just used the same trick and gone in Reys head the moment she was found like he did Kylo and be like “hey I’m your parents in your head talking to you come hang out and let’s get coffee” and that movie woulda been really short

As the resident Leia in space defender, I sure thought a lot of things looked as “silly” in this one, but since I cannot sleep all I’m thinking about is the lesson we have learned is never throw people down pits in Star Wars. They always survive and come back to bite you. Except Han and Phasma. They become memories and stains on the walls.

When Rey thinks she killed Chewie I got really excited and shocked they went there,

Then 5 minutes later JJ went nope fuck that interesting idea

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

I haven't seen this yet but Rey being a Palpatine is one of the silliest things I've ever read lmao

I'm imagining Abrams in a room with a bunch of suits the day after TLJ came out spinning a wheel with a bunch of Star Wars names on it seeing who she can be related to

"Han? Nah we've been there. Chewbacca? Feels forced. BB-8? Who even put that on here? Fuck it she's Palpatine's granddaughter let's make some money"

To preface this: I enjoyed TFA more overall, but TLJ was far more interesting in regards to the deeper elements and set-up moving forward; truly believe Rian did them a favor. Anyway...

I wish I could stop thinking about this dumb movie and how badly they dropped the ball. Despite the issues with the previous two, I saw them a few times in the theater and have enjoyed watching them since. After two of this one, I really don’t care to ever see it again. There’s not a single element or sequence where I’m like, “Man, I can’t wait to see that part again, especially on the big screen.” The whole trilogy is almost tainted and less enjoyable for me now.

I just realized we already had a story about Palpatine In Rebels tempting someone with the chance to be with their parents again, but that would have been better than this. Like, rather than blurt out she’s a Palpatine early in the movie, have it be that Palpatine can bring her to her parents. Rey goes to see what that means and only after rejecting it, it is revealed her bloodline.

still would have been dumb to make her a Palpatine, but at least would have been more interesting.

The Mad Max chase looked so bad when they’re in the canyon and do the spin maneuver at the end. Also, for all my issues with the Canto Bight animal riding, it looked just as goofy seeing it here on top of the ship in the final battle.

I really wanna catch another screening of this soon because I’m sure there’s a lot of things I missed but one thing that kept sticking with me as I watched it was how much DNA this has in common with Return and Revenge possibly to its own detriment. It’s going to be fun to see how thematically similar these trilogies are. It’s easy to poke fun and George Lucas’s “it’s like poetry, they rhyme” thing but I enjoy the connections

with that said, these main series movies have made this galaxy feel so small. Like, I understand the Skywalkers are an important part of the fiction but TLJ really blew the door wide open to expand this world and make it feel less contained. Sadly RoS has kinda diminished that and made it feel like this galaxy only has like 12 characters in it. I guess that’s the downside of making 3 trilogies that are so interconnected but I think it hurts the fiction more than it helps.

    im rambling very sorry

What was the purpose of any of that? We knew he lived IMMEDIATELY after it happened, and then they just rescued him fifteen minutes later?? Why did any of that happen lmao

Nah, it’s JJ, the concept art is in the art of force awakens book, they were even thinking about doing it in TFA.

I see it as that Palpatine went after Rey because she wasn’t aware of who she was and her purpose. Palpatine could definitely use that to his advantage in turning her to the dark side, opposed to trying to get his son, who fled from Palpatine. Seems like Palpatine knew Rey was more approachable in terms of manipulating. Of course this is just my opinion because the film never goes into detail on it.

But he doesn’t really manipulate Rey at all. Maybe as a child he could have. But ultimately he just tells her she has to do it. Then he says he will kill her friends.

he could have told his son he had to do it or he would kill his wife.

either way, it would have been way better if he had manipulated Rey in some way. But he didn’t.

I’ll always give JJ props for bringing the franchise back with TFA, but I hope lucasfilm learns from this that our expectations in terms of writing a coherent story have risen over time and someone like JJ / terrio are not the type of guys to be writing anything other than reboots.

not that i expected to see him, but it’s kinda weird how irrelevant obi wan was to this series. i don’t think luke even mentions him once.
