This video from a year & a half ago, trying to make sense of JJ as a storyteller through the lens of Felicity, is kinda funny to watch now:

I think people are making too big of a deal about Jannah and Lando. I thought it was just, "Hey, I'm an ex-stormtrooper, I don't know where I'm from. I wish I did." "Well, this war is over. Why don't we go on an adventure and try to find out? What else would we have to do?"

I found everything with leia terrible and morally repugnant that they did it tbh

I’m sure the Fischer family / estate consented but that shit is so gross to me

It was also sweaty as fuck in how they had to maneuver dialogue to fit the leftover footage they had of her

    Just one dude’s take tho

I said this exact thing to my dad this morning. He called to talk about it and said he didn’t want to react harshly last night because he realized how much the ending meant to him and he couldn’t admit to himself that he disliked so much of it, but after sleeping on it he echoed a ton of what has been said in here.

I really wish it was just implied. Rey talking to other members of the cast about what Leia said, while she's busy talking to others in the background. Give her one good send off with Rey, and that be it. I was good with everything with her and Ben though.

  11. OK, first impressions are in this week's newsletter.

Or, you can read them on the website here.

    Filled with spoilers of course.

  14. I had written most of my first impressions before reading it, then read that and was like ... fuck ... this is good ... uh let me link it at the end. :crylaugh: We both noticed the characters running around just yelling ... stuff.

  15. I'm seeing some rankings out there that are blowing my mind.

Poe’s voiceover before the final battle was so bad. That whole hype speech felt off actually including Finn’s contribution.

I kind of want to draw up my own idea of what a conclusion after TLJ would have looked like

This is a great write up. As was yours, Jason. But goddamn is that little anecdote that Chris Pine tells about filming Star Trek disheartening. Woof. It really makes it seem like JJ Abrams' shortcomings as a filmmaker are not at all by accident. Made all the more upsetting by just how hugely successful he has become and how much power he now has in Hollywood. Why would he change anything at this point...? Doing what he has been doing has made him one of the most successful filmmakers on the planet.

Hulk’s screenwriting book is really great for anyone aspiring to write or just learn story mechanics.

Apparently the visual dictionary confirms that Starkiller Base was officially the former planet of Illum.

I am worried about how people keep mentioning the hyper-kinetic editing and pace, and how characters keep having to run from scene to scene away from danger the entire time. Peter Jackson's Hobbit movies do this A LOT and it has the complete opposite effect on me than I think it is supposed to: it makes the movie seem unbearably long and tedious.

Despite my many issues with the movie, it was absolutely not tedious or felt unbearably long for me.
