Hard to connect romantically when you never get any time to actually connect on a human level. Kylo rejected everything Rey was pursuing almost the entire time they ever knew each other. To build romantic tension you’d have to dramatize it (which is why the moments where they just kind of talk in TLJ are some of the best their characters have, even if I largely don’t read romance in the sequences*). Guess what this movie doesn’t do. Dramatize anything about Kylo and Ren’s relationship.

    * there is sexual tension in the topless Driver scene because... he’s topless. I don’t think it would have been impossible to write an earned Ben/Rey romance, but this trilogy did not write one.

I found someone who doesn't understand Star Wars even more than JJ, incredible.

Also since Palpatine created Anakin, Ben’s grandfather, and is also Rey’s grandfather, that makes writing an engaging romance about them kind of tricky.

See, I think they totally connected on a human level. By the time they get to talking in the hut and touching hands, they totally get where the other is coming from. She cared and felt for Ben Solo. He understood her struggle for identity. But absolutely nothing of that needs to be romantic.

Yeah I have no problem with this part. I think he wanted her to stike him down on her own free will which would be giving in to the darkside. But by deflecting the lightning it was in self defence. A lot different then just striking him down.

Rectangle shaped box sets just stick out in a bad way. They should’ve of made it similar to the Star Wars Blu-ray saga box set from 2011.

Sleeping on this, I think this movie had plenty of fan service that I enjoyed but the narrative side of things was hella goofy, especially the Emperor having Zeus level Force Lightning taking down ships. I honestly blame JJ Abrams on that, dude sucks

Also did Rey just fix Anakin’s lightsaber that was destroyed in TLJ? Was that explained?

I agree with you, the scenes in TLJ really develop them well. Between TFA and Rise, I just don't think they had enough time or proximity to develop the romantic story beyond TLJ that they were apparently trying to tell. I also agree it doesn't need to be romantic, but if they wanted to portray that, there were many better routes to take.

The whole movie definitely was super rushed, like it just jumped beat to beat in rabid succession

Agreed. What we got in TLJ did not support the romantic aspect here and this movie didn’t really do anything with it beyond saying it was romantic. But it also said it was the force dyad?

I went to a Reylo screening in SF and the vast majority really hated it. I think they could have easily saved most of them just by letting Ben live which should have happened no matter which side you come down on in the Reylo debate. I'm fine with people not agreeing with Reylo but calling what have been the most knowledgeable, intelligent people in the fandom who wrote so many great essays, predicted the Force Bond in TLJ, dumb is just beyond idiotic to me. I blocked the one person in the thread who was really pushing my buttons and I'm sorry for overreacting but I'm just really depressed about this movie and I let it effect my interactions.

Don’t ask what a Reylo screening is don’t ask what a Reylo screening is.

We are generally of a similar mindset on the big picture stuff in Star Wars. I dig it.

comic book movies though? Super opposite usually haha

but I’m glad we vibe on Star Wars as much as we do.
