I want to like it and am going to go in open-minded but it’s hilarious if all the TLJ backlash caused an even worse movie.

Meant from the perspective of those that didn’t like it and lashed out.

It wasn't, but the gist seems to be that this does steer away from or undermine everything TLJ stood for

I find it humorous that the roles from TLJ are basically reversed (people that complained about people that shit on TLJ are the same people shitting on TROS and vice versa).

Disclaimer: I both enjoyed and have problems with TLJ and expect my feelings toward this to be similarly split.

Actually rewatched TLJ last night and liked it more; still had some issues but none of those are probably what’s being retconned here, which sucks. Definitely should’ve mapped this out better from the jump. Or had the balls to continue from where Rian left off.

Should have given Matt Reeves a blank check to write and direct this

The first “Star Trek” absolutely rules.

Reversing everything from the second film in a trilogy is exactly how a mess like TROS is made and it is what most people here were afraid of. The anti-TLJ crowd did it to themselves. It’s time for them to reap what they sow. They will of course only blame JJ or Johnson for some odd reason but Johnson is the only one that shouldn’t be blamed. Abrams, Kennedy, Iger, and whoever had the idea of hiring Chris Terrio are all at fault for thinking this is how the ending of the saga should be made.

I do think there’s a point to be made though that there should’ve been a bigger overarching plot for this trilogy from the beginning. I think bringing on dramatically different writers/directors, and giving them each free reign to basically do whatever they wanted in a trilogy that’s supposed to tell one overarching story, was a recipe for something like this to happen. But I do agree that backing away from decisions made in TLJ is VERY dumb if that indeed happens. Sounds like this really turned into a mess.

spoiler tagging for those who wish to remain pure

are they actually backing away from everything in TLJ? or just that one thing?

It seems like that's what everyone's issue is? which i can understand.

This film, from what I’ve read, is basically more like a sequel to TFA minus the major things that happened in TLJ that can’t be avoided by JJ (Kylo taking over the First Order, Luke being dead). JJ missed this one by a long shot.

It walks back a lot of what TLJ stood for. It fully embraces the Jedi, instead of wanting to move forward with something new. It goes back to having a bunch of callbacks instead of being its own thing. It pushes Rose to the background. It makes no mention to the TLJ ending, that seemed to suggest there are other young Jedi out there. The Luke in this is pretty much the polar opposite of the Luke in TLJ.

100%. I love it. Not a fan of “Into Darkness,” but I could watch ST any time.

2009 Star Trek is competent, unintelligent blockbuster entertainment with great casting and visual energy, which seems to be Abrams’ ceiling.

this is maybe the most disappointing thing for me to see, as it was a standout moment for me.

First Star Trek was super cool.

I’m still excited to see TROS despite the reviews. this trilogy has gone by so fast that I never feally felt connected to it’s characters/story and still feel like I barely know these new characters/what the story is that’s trying to be told, etc . So haven’t been as emotionally invested in this as I was with Luke leia and Han

There is no way I am not going to have fun watching this. It's a shame it wont have the impact The Last Jedi did though, even disliking half of that movie, I enjoyed its shaking of the Star Wars formula and fandom.

This is exactly my feeling, i'm seeing it with fellow SW dorks like myself, and i know it's going to be a fun ride, even if in the end, i don't absolutely love it.

JJ Abrams & Chris Terrio 'course-correcting' and ret-conning all of the bold storytelling decisions Rian Johnson made is a huge bummer. If that is indeed what they do with this last film, my biggest regret with this new trilogy will be that they didn't hash out a story outline ahead of time. They must have really HATED whatever outline George Lucas had for this trilogy to toss it out and go with 'we'll see what we come up with' instead.

Still cannot wait to see this.
