  1. Entertainment blogger David Poland recalls Lucas’ comment on Wednesday at the Publicist’s Guild luncheon: “George Lucas, giving the award to Sid Ganis, who was the in-house publicist on Star Wars: Episode Five – The Empire Strikes Back, said, ‘Sid is the reason why The Empire Strikes Back is always written about as the best of the films, when it actually was the worst one.'”

Haha. Wow. I guessed I tuned out a lot of him during the past decade or so.

I should have said that after seeing that type of thing, like the drubbing from fans Damon Lindelof took, he might be a little more measured and diplomatic with his takes. It sucks to see him and the cast playing right into the narrative.

  4. And what's the obsession with needing (or wanting) every single thread that's shown in a movie getting pulled and unraveled to a complete conclusion?

I re-watched The Last Jedi the other day and loved it as much as I did in theaters and after rewatching it when it first hit iTunes.

It's funny to me how much shit gets thrown at the way Luke is handled in the movie, when Yoda (sweet puppet and all) is the one who comes out and says: "Hey guys, sticking to old ways just because is fucking dumb. Move on."

Yet I don't see anyone going "NOT MY YODA".

What I'm saying is: Yoda absolutely rules.

  6. Exactly. This need to make it seem like you've 'saved' something or whatever is just gross. There's a classy diplomatic way to do it when you know the press (and the worst of your fanbase) is going to take your words and cut them up for the agenda.

(And if you wanted to tell your three movie story you shoulda made that the deal from the start and asked for a big fucking check and done it all. But you didn't, and someone else came up with a very meaningful and important story in "your" universe and you could at least not succumb to the worst of the internet and throw a fellow director and creative under the bus like this.)

yeah Knives Out i can confidently say will remain safely in my top 5 if not top 3 films of the year.

i'll of course not assume anything about ROS, because it may be an absolutely satisfying finale and i hope it is. but it was interesting to me to have the 3 different directors route. i don't think trevorrow should have been in there so i was happy to see him let go, but it would have been interesting to think who another director could have been besides Rian or JJ again.

anyone have any hypothetical wish lists of a director you think either would have been a great pick (besides Rian or JJ) for episode 9? or even just someone you'd like to see tackle something in the Star Wars universe

And both of them have expressed their concerns. Whether or not you agree with them is another story.

The only thing Rian arguably ignored in TLJ was Snoke, who wasn’t interesting & was a relief to be disposed of. Everything else, he dealt with, whether you like how he did or not.

  11. Off the top of my head Patty Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Karyn Kusama, and Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

Goddamn that'd be the ultimate mea culpa.

The bits of Lord and Miller which remained in Solo were the best parts.

Maybe if Feige really is being groomed to take over from Kennedy eventually, that's the olive branch he puts out there?

Imo the biggest would be snoke, not necessarily ignored but forked off to another path. Was it cool to see Snoke die in TLJ? Yeah, it was a good scene, but it would be hard to convince me that Abrams created and introduced Snoke, the leader of the first order and master of Kylo, who turned him to the dark side, to be killed off with 5 minutes of screen time and no added information about the character in the sequel, whether people wanted more info about him or not.

Also the Knights of Ren. They didn't even get a name drop, but Abrams is bringing them into IX so he obviously wanted to continue where he left off with those characters.

That's just a couple off the top of my head. I enjoyed VIII but it's obvious Rian wanted to focus on what was ahead instead of everything that happened in the previous film, some of which I liked.

  14. My guess is they stay away from Disney for the foreseeable future. That 9 figure deal over at Sony is gonna let them do whatever they want; which I'm also cool with. I just really like them.

Agreed. How they've made a career built around ideas which sound terrible on paper yet deliver in spades is admirable.

    Clone High forever.

Lord and Miller should collaborate with Mel Brooks for the infamous Spaceball II: The Search For More Money.

I’d love to see them lampoon Disney with it.

I can’t believe Obiwan mentioned The Clone Wars in a New Hope and it wasn’t explored in The Empire Strikes Back. Bull shit.

  19. This is where I completely disagree, much of the film is about exactly what happened in the previous film(s), but it's a deconstruction of what a Jedi really is and what's their place in the galaxy, who Rey is, and what the actual meaning of legacy is. All of that is hyper focused on what happened in previous films, it just asks of the audience those questions instead of "well, Snoke's actually a clone of Dooku with Palpatine blood mixed in" or some other MacGuffin.

  20. Hah, that's one of the things I was thinking about when I said it was antithetical to Star Wars to need every answer right away. Some of the best parts in the OG trilogy are references and mentions of things we have no idea what they are but it leads to feeling like the world is actually lived in and real with history.
