Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (J.J. Abrams, December 20, 2019) Movie • Page 242

Discussion in 'Entertainment Forum' started by Jason Tate, Jul 6, 2018.

  1. Has anyone read Resistance Reborn, and if so, is 1) it worth it? 2) interesting from our main characters story perspective? Trying to decide if I wanna plow through it before the movie or just wait until after to give it a read.

Rian to me is Holdo. Sacrificing his reputation to stand true to his vision in the spite of the questioning of his direction because he knows in his heart it’s right.

In a meta way his decision to put the characters through the hardest adversity they could also ended up doing the same thing for the actors. Mark had to deal
With his own perception of Luke and his legacy and didn’t like it. Daisy and Finn were security blankets for each other as both were up and coming actors who could rely on each other much like Finn and Rey. They were separated and forced to face their characters and acting alone and it was probably less fun.

In the end even if none of the actors liked the movie or even hated it because it didn’t wasn’t as fun to make or didn’t mesh with their vision for the character their characters and them as people grew because of the adversity Rian put them through.

I have two friends that have watched all the movies for the first time since they were kids and barely remember them, both LOVED TLJ and think it's a top three SW movie. No idea why older fans hate it. Also mark has no reason to bitch about TLJ. it's easily the best portrayal of the character yet imo. Fuck him and fuck everyone taking shots at Rian two years later

I have. I am sure it’s not necessary to read before.

the focus is in Poe primarily, we get very little with Rey and a little bit more with Finn. Some solid Leia stuff. The other large part are various characters from across canon. I’ll keep it vague for any who still wish to read it.

it sets the table up for things we have seen in the trailers. I’ll try to find my post about it that sums up the “bigger things” it reveals.

  7. OK, thanks. Was trying to decide if I wanted to read it before or after or just go full Wikipedia for it.

(Curious if they'll give us more books with these characters after the movies end.)

I can where both sides are coming from. Yeah, Rian took a risk to tell a story he wanted to tell, good for him. I also agree with Abrams that an episodic Star Wars film probably wasn’t the best to go in with that kind of story telling. I also don’t think Abrams owes it to Rian to follow everything he did in TLJ since Rian didn’t follow some of what Abrams set up in TFA.

Rian set up more in TLJ than JJ did in TFA

I just finished and I really liked it. It’s super connected to the other canon books and a lot of those characters that i didn’t know which at points made me feel left out but it wasn’t like i was lost. A lot of Snap/Nora Wexley and Wedge. It also has incredibly huge ties to a bloodline that made it all worth it and was kind of blown away by that connection.

It focuses mostly on Poe of the main characters and he really deals with his failures in the last Jedi. Also I love seeing Leia continue to have to deal with leading. Even though shes not the main focus I think it was worth it just to spend more time with her and watch her be the strongest and most resilient character in Star Wars.

It’s subjective whether your time to read it is “worth it” but I’m personally happy I read it. Watching this group attempt to rebuild and what they went through I think will enhance my appreciation for where they are st the start of 9. I also think it being an audio book helps.

Just realized I never really did a post listing some stuff haha but nothing major happened behind explaining something we see in the trailer. Well, as far as I can say from only seeing trailers haha but I am sure it won’t be referenced, just a thing we will see in the movie and go, “i know where that came from”.

it was an enjoyable read and I do recommend it! But don’t feel the need to rush through it.

While also ignoring some of what Abrams had set up. Why should Abrams be 100% on what Rian did when Rian wasn’t 100% in on what Abrams did?

I liked some of what Rian did but I don’t blame Abrams for wanting to go his own route with IX

Are people upset that J.J. is doing what he wants? Probably some. But that’s not what I’m annoyed at at all.

Maybe J.J. could just .... not talk? Imagine George Lucas getting pissed that Lawrence Kasdan or Leigh Brackett didn't follow his story to the T.

i feel like it made so much sense for Luke to have come to the realization that the jedi order is kind of nonsense. and when you watch all the other movies, they're always full of characters questioning the jedi order and whether or not it's the right thing. i'm not saying anakin going full evil was the right way to go haha, but obi-wan and qui-gon definitely had their share of valid questions about how things are run. and because of how the jedi ran themselves, they failed, and the dark side took almost all of them out.

Rian is a more interesting filmmaker than JJ and what he did with what JJ set up was great. JJ would be well served to take influence from Rian and I largely don’t feel the inverse is true.

I'm just happy that Rian was able to go and make his own movie and it be one of the best of the year and exceed expectations despite the backlash from TLJ.

  25. The funny thing is he does still complain about it every now and again and once said Empire was his least favorite.
