Got to Clones yesterday and yea it's pretty rough. The opening shot of the cruiser coming in upside down to Coruscant is great, but then it quickly brings you back down. Damn near every character relationship feels forced. Obi-Wan and Anikan's introduction in the elevator gives us subtle hints at a friendship, but there is little else there. Anikan and Padme have one moment right before they board their transport to Naboo where they both express insecurity over the situation and make a joke about R2 being there to protect them, but there is close to no chemistry elsewhere. The only one that feels right is Palpatine and Anakin's meeting, where we get a clear idea of how Anakin looks to Palps as a mentor and how Palps has been manipulating him to feel overconfident and placing seeds of doubt about the Jedi Order. I was surprised to see that they only had one scene together in this one.

Obi-Wan's trip to Kamino is still kind of fun. Ewan does great here as a Jedi detective and the meeting between him and Jango is probably the best scene in the movie. And his space chase with the seismic charges is good. Controversial opinion, I think, but I don't mind the diner scene. I think Dexter Jetster is an okay character, all things considered. The 50s diner setting is a little off-putting, but Dex and Obi-Wan have more chemistry together than most characters in the movie. I also like Dooku & Obi-Wan's meeting. Dooku straight up tells him everything! How do the Jedi not realize it's Palps! I wish Lucas had done something different with Dooku instead of making him Sidious's apprentice. He had the potential to be interesting before he starts swinging his lightsaber.

The trip to Tattooine is a nice breath of fresh air with some actual practical sets. The overuse of CGI, especially in the end battle is tiring. That end battle seriously feels like a video game cut scene or a higher budget Clone Wars episode. Neither of those things is inherently bad (I freaking love The Clone Wars), but it just looks bad here. The lightsaber duels are the worst of my rewatch so far.

Of course the Jedi couldn’t tell Palpy was a Sith! They didn’t even fucking know the queen of Naboo was a damn decoy

Exactly. And the way he phrases thing to Padme while on Tatooine hints at his knowing as well.

Just started my rewatch of this. It will take me a couple of days since I’m only watching at the gym. But jeez Anakin, could you be anymore of a fucking creep? Not even a hey nice to see you Jar Jar, just straight into she doesn’t love me back!!!

Is Zam’s speeder making that noise or is it just part of the score? Because if it’s making that noise then that is a terrible vehicle for a shadowy assassin.

Captain putting Padme on blast with his “I’d be more worried about her trying something than him”.

But my most controversial take would be I actually don’t mind the “I don’t like sand” dialogue. Yes it’s terrible in terms of actual written stuff but it works in the context of the movie. He’s this creepy teenager that has had no interaction with a girl trying to be smooth. And it shows. I would have never remembered this line if it wasn’t for all the memes though.

Also, what the fuck does Padme mean when she says she can’t date Anikan because she is a senator? Bail Organa has a wife. He’s a senator. What does that matter?

now, Anikan being a Jedi should stop him, yes. But her emphasizing she can’t because of being a senator has never made any sense.

I always took it that since she was a senator she shouldn't be romantically tied to a Jedi

They're generals in the official military. Would prob be a bad look if a U.S. Senator was having a romantic fling with a U.S. General too. Just trying to make sense of it lol

I mean, no one should be romantically tied to a Jedi, her being a senator is irrelevant if it is based around him being a Jedi.

It’s not a fling though? It’s supposed to be a serious deep relationship. Are generals and senators today really not allowed to date?

Anakin says earrly in the film that attachment is forbidden, and I imagine being a high profile in politics, Padme doesn't want any romantic interference at this stage in her career, whether that be with a Jedi, or whoever.

But also, after 2 hours of no chemistry and awkward exchanges, she confesses her love as they enter the arena.

    :-/

    OOF!!!

Can't believe that kind of brutality made it into a family friendly space fantasy.

Also Obi-wan is over here saying how you can’t trust politicians all the time yet the entire Jedi council is over here just constantly going by whatever the chancellor is telling them
