I dunno. He only smashed it because he was mocked for it. If the helmet was always his idea, now that Snoke is gone, going back to what he truly wanted does make some sense.

I dunno. I guess that's a decent reading of that scene, but it's not how I'd read it.

Not sure that it was Kylo feeling embarrassed by the helmet so much as him feeling anger (sure, mixed w/ shame) at the system that he had idolized. Creating the helmet in the first place seemed like Vader worship to me, & even though Snoke thought the helmet was dumb, Kylo rejecting both it & him seem to go together. Y'know, the whole "let the past die" thing, which people mistake as Rian's philosophy when it's really Kylo's. No more master & apprentice, no more menacing helmet, etc. Rebuilding the helmet is kinda the opposite of letting the past die.

Dang it, now I really wanna write something out about how Kylo, Luke, & Rey's journeys in TLJ reflect the different ways that religious/spiritual people deconstruct their faiths, lol. 'Cause, y'know, the topics of religion, deconstruction, & TLJ aren't polarizing enough separately.

    Sure...

But if immediately going to the throne after the fight and trying to get Rey by his side doesn’t really feel like letting the past die, despite what he says.

The Forcecenter podcast had a great discussion on Kylo’s mask last week. They theorized the mask symbolizes him trying to hide his light. When he has it on, he’s big bad Kylo Ren, Supreme Leader of the First Order but when he has it off, Ben Solo still comes through. With the mask, he can lie to himself and be the Vader like figure he wants to be, which makes sense, now that he’s the Supreme Leader he’s want to project that more confident dark side and wear it again. Snoke tells him to remove it because he doesn’t want him to be able to hide and he destroys it after being called out for still having light in him, which he shows in the next scene by not firing on Leia. When he does bad things and has the mask off (kill Han, “kill Luke”, turn on Rey and beg her to join him), you can see the anguish on his face which can hide under the mask.

I thought spoilers were allowed as long as they are covered up?

Yep. As long as its spoiler tagged it’s okay.

I know nobody actually knows when. But what MNF games were people guessing the final trailer would drop during? I remember people had it likely narrowed down to a couple games.

My guess is Jets/Patriots on 10/21 but Packers/Lions on 10/14 is also a possibility solely going off of the mid/end october release theyve used the last 2 films

I’ve always seen masks as representation of ego and especially in Star Wars. It literally and figuratively changes your view of how you see the world. For Kylo it almost reminds me of the kid from Big Daddy when he wants to be invisible and puts on sunglasses. He feels totally insecure and vulnerable without it. He wants to be Vader and he’s so attached to being perceived as intimidating (which is why I love how people reacted negatively when he takes off his helmet in TFA because he doesn’t look very intimidating)

As ForceCenter has mentioned both times he’s been told to take off his helmet he killed that person (Han and Snoke). Rey criticizes his mask and he takes it off willingly there but he’s also in a position of power and doesn’t feel threatened.

I love he’s back in the helmet because he’s saying no more. He put his foot down from all these people telling him to take off this false identity of himself and saying this is who I am. And I don’t think it shows regression.

Star Wars explained has this awesome video with Skytalkers talking about the ceramic technique they believe they stole from Japanese culture that’s meant to fix things by not hiding the broken parts but featuring them/celebrating them. So I take that as Kylo embracing all the trauma he’s experienced now and letting it be his motivation and source of anger to stay on the Dark Side.

I don't even think the helmet looks cool. Adam Drivers face is way cooler.

I loved his helmet but so far from the promotional material and whatnot, I’m not liking the red fused lines or whatever it is on it. It’s aesthetically ugly, imo

Hopefully it looks better while watching the movie and I’ll be wrong but if it still looks bad, I prefer him having no helmet now as well. His face has enough character on its’ own.

Adam Driver rules. He’s the best part of this new trilogy.

I’ll agree that even though I love the helmet being back from a symbolic standpoint, I do hope he only has it for a portion of the movie because Adams too pretty and wayyyyyyyy to good of an actor to hide him.

His look of hope, like a lost child, when he’s asking Rey to join him is perfect.

I wonder if the full trailer will finally show some Hux, Rose, General Pryde, Zorii, and Dominic Monaghan’s character. Only a couple more weeks which is crazy to think about

Driver was more intimidating in the last half of TLJ than he was during the entirety of TFA. You could see the craziness in his face.

Exactly. The mask was cool in TFA and I liked the idea behind it but I think he's already outgrown it and going back to it feels like a regression to me.

What’s incredible is that I totally agree but also so many moments you can see the wounded, vulnerable side of him LIKE when he pleads for Rey to come with him or deciding to push the button to kill Leia.

Plays both sides of the character so well and with equal believability. No matter what JJ decides for Kylo/Ben i can’t wait to see how Driver brings it to life

Think there was speculation, from an article discussing the music/score, that this was gonna push 2:45/3 hours, i could be misremembering though

I read an article over the summer claiming this will be the shortest film in the sequel trilogy but I haven’t seen that rumor since then
